Planning Holiday on West Coast. What's a good area to base in LA?

Just planning a two week trip to NAB from Down Under with the wife and two teenagers. What would be a good place to base ourselves in LA for a week or so, so we can do day trips to Hollywood, Universal, the Anaheim attractions, and the beach?

I've stayed in Orange County a few times but it's a bit dull (sorry!:kali:) so I was thinking maybe Santa Monica, Venice Beach, or West Hollywood, or.... well I really don't know. I was thinking we may rent a holiday apartment rather than a hotel. Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,
Per

For the kids: the usual......D-land, Knotts, M-mtn. (What the hell is the attraction to an oversized mouse anyway? I set death-dealing traps for the little bastards)

For you and the wifey.............What do you want and what is your budget?

BTFW, no, this is not an offer to babysit. Of course, 200 a night to keep the rugrats locked up in the closet..........maybe.

Throw in a couple of bottles of water, a couple of coloring books/crayons, diapers/wipes, it could be an easy gig...............

LMFAO!!!!!!!!!

haha - no baby sitting. I reckon I should be able to get something betrween 1.5k and 2k for a week? 2 or 3 bedder, but it's more what is the best area to base in?

Use vrbo.com and get a vacation rental in the hollywood hills. many are cheaper than hotels, but with a better view.

Yeah, H-wood Hills is nice, and close by everything, even D-land is only 45 minutes from there. Newport Beach area in OC is also really nice.

avoid San Diego if you can. partly because Shamu is like 4th generation and not cool anymore, but mostly because i work here(not at Sea World), and could benefit from one less car on the roads.

have a swell time! the advice sofar it great. especially the one about not coming to San Diego. it's so overrated.
