Planet Earth

Just seen the first part of the latest BBC series of Planet Earth and thought it was interesting at the end listening to the probems they had filming the Emperor Penguins. It seemed they were using ARRI cameras to capture the footage but I couldn't quite make it out. They certainly weren't using digital though because the film jammed in the cold.

Does this series get shown in America? They have stunning footage in it, great documentary.

I think they show it here, but the only BBC I watch is Fawlty Towers, Doctor Who, and Coupling. You know, educational programming ;)

Hey
They are going to start showing it here this weekend on the Discovery Channel. I have been watching some of the stuff online and it looks absolutely stunning. Is it worth it to get the set?

From the commercials I have been seeing I am totally stoked. Do they do alot of the super slow mo stuff and than fast motion for parts in the series or is it just in the commercials to get us pumped?

I saw part of it already on Discovery HD. They previewed it a couple months ago and it is fantastic. I can't imagine watching it on Stanard Definition, because the point is the visual clarity.

Great documentary though.

By far some of the best nature cinemetography I have ever seen......sucks I have to miss out by watching it in SD.

Saw it last night on Dicovery HD Theater. I've got a rear projection HDTV. It looked absolutely incredible. They got shots of sharks leaping out of the water entirely and snatching seals at 1000 fames a sec. Absolutely stunning.

That shark got like 14 feet in the air. I want some hops like that.

watched 4 episodes in1080P .... i nearly pooped myself. it was done with extreme skill. the color and clarity and the compositions were masterful.

I have been watching, and rewatching the first 3 episodes. Right now, I am just becoming more miserable in that I don't own an HDTV and I know how good it would look!

yeah me too.

I really think I might get one in the next couple of months.

I can't really afford it, but thats never stopped me before.

super pissed because Ive been waiting for this...and the freakin bulb in my hdtv broke today. SO PISSED.

btw, does aynone know what lenses they were using....they said they were sometimes up to a 1/2 mile away! ... thats not a camera lens at that point, its a telescope.

Definitely.
It's absolutely stunning. They really pushed the boundaries with the technology and logistics.
As regards the slow motion stuff, there are proabably about 6 different shots.
Don't get too hung up on the slow motion though, as the rest of it is amazing.
The Heligimbal & Cinebule stuff is amazing, and the timelapse work was a revelation to me - they do all sorts of fancy stuff with it, including many tracking shots and pans following various things.

I have the DVD box set and both books. The behind the scenes book is very interesting.

I wish I could get hold of the rest of the material they shot!

AFAIK in the heligimbal they used Canon HJ40x14B lenses with a motorized 2x extender.
This gives a focal length of 14-1120mm

Again AFAIK, The cameraman for the heligimbal was Michael Kelem

I can't imagine the production costs for this series. Just that incredible shot in "pole to pole" where they had the season shift from winter to summer in time lapse.....your talking about a period over 3-4 months...to have a camera rolling for that long
