Plane Travel with HMC150 HMC151e

Hi guys, just wandering if anyone has any experience going round the world with their camera and equipment and what the best way is for me to do it.

I will be carrying the camera in a HD207 ( http://www.amazon.com/Kata-HB-207-Backpack-camcorder-Insertrolly/dp/B000AOTTW6 ). I will also have a tripod and a small suitcase (one that I believe will fit in most hand luggage compartments).

Does anyone think I should check the camera in? Or should I check in the tripod and small suitcase?

Thoughts and comments welcomed, I'm filming in Miami, Delhi, Berlin, Barcelona, Rotterdam and London.

Hi Ryan, I flew with my HMC151 from London to South America, no way would I ever consider putting it in checked luggage, stayed with me on-board in a hold-all packed with my clothes. I would have prefered a proper camera bag but didnt have one at the time.

i fly regularly with my kata 207. always with carryon, never ever check your camera.

you are allowed 2 carryon items. and mine are usually camera bag and tripod bag.

Vern from Vermont is worrying! I'm definitely going to take it as hand luggage. There's no way I can take my tripod on with me as hand luggage though, it's too big?

Assuming you have a soft case for your tripod.
1-You can buy a hard tripod case which is the safest and put the soft case and tripod inside.
2.- You can buy a golf club travel case like a Red Tomatoe and do the same and often find one of these on Craigslist or elsewhere used.
3.-You can go the less expensive route which my buddy has done for years. He and I were on planes every week for a couple of years and he is still doing this.
Get a Sono Tube (concrete form) from The Home Depot. Cut a 3/4" plywood disk that fits in one end. Attach this end with screws and make another disk for the top out of 3/4" and a slightly larger one out of 1/4" center and glue and screw the top together. put the top on and insert a couple of screws in the side to hold it in place. You can attach a handle as well. This will cost you twenty bucks and works.

I fly frequently with my HMC150. I always put it in the overhead bin. If you get stuck with a plane that has a very small overhead bin, pull the camera out of the bag and check the bag at the gate and keep the camera with you.

Then what? Do they let you carry it in your lap during takeoff and such? Or do you set it under the seat in front of you?

I just travelled with my dvx100 which is relatively the same as an hmc150 size-wize, and my case fit in the overhead bin perfectly and I was filming on the plane for a bit too and they didn't give me any problems. This was in a boeing 767-300.

Hi Allen,

I usually book large planes, but the one time my bag would not fit in the over head bin, I placed the camera on the floor and held it in place with my feet for take off and landing. I don't know if they will let you hold it on your lap. I guess if you had a jacket with you, you could just cover it up if you placed it on your lap. Either scenario is better than checking it at the gate.
