FS7: PL-mount

My FS7 will arrive soon. I have 4x Zeiss CP.2 Primes (PL-mount/EF mount interchangeable) and Canon EF 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 in my stock.

To start to get experiance with lenses my intension is to keep my CP.2 on PL-mount (not change to EF). What kind of PL adapter would you recommend. Do i need one with rod support (for example Vocas with/without rod support)?.

Woud you alternative reccommend to change the CP.2 to EF mount .... and only go for Metabones Speedbooster or Commlite ?

All e-mount cams have very weak lens support. I would not mount anything longer than 4 inches, including adapter, without adequate support. It isn't so much for structural damage, altho', that sure is possible, as much as its for repeatable optical quality. And too much support is as bad as not enough support.

I would stay PL and take a look at the Wooden Camera PL adapter. Keep in mind it may need to be shimmed. And definitely support the lens and the mount.

A few thoughts here.

#1 The CP.2 lenses can also be mounted with E mount on the back of the lenses. Thus no adapters needed. I don't believe the CP.2's are so heavy as to require a lens support. This makes for lighter weight configuration and likely no requirement for rods or other support.

#2 I you go PL mount the Wooden Camera mount is nice. It is designed to be used with support from above using their top plate. Not 100% sure if their adapter can be supported from rods below.

#3 Other E to PL mounts exist form 16:9, Vocas, Solid Camera and a variety of other manufacturers so depending on budget and support mount style and if you have other emount cameras you might have then check out if the mount you purchase could work with other cameras.

I've sold lens mounts for CP.2 lenses as well as a variety of PL to E mount adapters depending on customer need and camera configuration. I've not heard of any major issues on any front.

You forgot to mention that the inventor of the PL mount adapter for MFT/E and the first professional PL mod of a DSLR is a contributor to this forum... me.

The original and most popular PL mount system used on more major productions and more professional rental facilities world wide is made in Los Angeles by Hot Rod Cameras. I believe we are also the only manufacturer offering free shimming of your camera with the purchase of any Hot Rod PL adapter.

You'll have to PM, call, or email HRC for details.

As anyone who has watched by FS7 master class knows, I have a PL to e-mount adapter from Hot Rod Cameras on my FS7. I originally got it for use with my FS100 a few years ago, and now it has found new life with the FS7 and it works great. I highly recommend it.

Doug, does every thread need a plug to buy your FS7 course? I'm assuming Vortex Media must be a DVXUser sponser to be doing all these posts, but it sure seems like lately a whole lot of simple questions deserve to be answered by paying $85 for six months of access to a resource that you stand to benefit from financially. Not to mention, answers here are available to everyone, for free, forever - and anyone using your "streaming only" service who needs answers for more than six months has to pay another $85 or ultimately come back to a forum like this.

I'm not saying your resource isn't valuable (although I'm personally not willing to pay $85 to find out), but why do simple questions easily answered by the community here for free need blatant plugs for your product?

Honestly, it just seems pushy and inappropriate to me.

Maybe if you put it in your signature and made your posts themselves stay on topic?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I honestly thought that in most of my posts I am giving tangible information that actually answers the question being asked. My time to offer some advice or information is worth something to me. Is it so distasteful to you that in exchange for helping someone, perhaps I mention my training course? I don't recall any thread where I went off topic. Where is that?

However, if you feel that my style of posting is inappropriate then I will step away from DVX.

Goodbye.

Doug,

I've sent you a private message. Hopefully we can discuss further in private, without disturbing other's threads. My apologies to the OP for this distraction.

I purchased the Hot Rod Camera PL to e-mount adapter for my Fs7 but the fit is poor. The flanges are too small and they allow the adapter to move back and forth. Or at least that is the case with the one I purchased. Because of the play in the HRC PL adapter, when operating the focus ring on my Red Pro zoom the mount wiggles back and forth. Hoping to secure the mount, I purchased the Hot Rod Camera PL support chassis. But it doesn't work with the fs7. Appears that it was designed for the FS100. The protrusion on the lower front of the Fs7 prevents the Hot Rod PL support chassis from being able to line up correctly. Quite frustrating that, since the HRC stuff is VERY pricey. I have yet to see a PL adapter support bracket that works with the Fs7 other than the Wooden Camera support bracket. Because the WC adapter is uniquely supported from above, it avoids the issue of the protrusion on the lower part of the Fs7 body. The problem it introduces is that it isn't a mount that is easily removed for hot-swapping between PL glass and EF / native E mount glass.

I may have to just forgo the mount support altogether. Does the Metabones PL to e -mount adapt have play in the mount or is it a snug fit?

Doug- does your HRC PL to e-mount adapter also have play?
