PL mount adapter - why so exspensive?

My guess:

It is expensive because it likely the only solution for mounting PL lenses on a 5D/7D without having to commit to the irreversible removal of the mirror box.

To keep from having to remove it, the lenses have to be situated outside of the camera body and much further from the film plane than they were designed (since PL lenses protrude into the camera body). This requires high quality optical glass and well-machined, precise, and very sturdy metal to allow the lenses to be mounted properly and to maintain focus on the film plane.

I will say that for what you are getting, if you have your hands on a range of PL lenses and are the right kind of shooter, $3,000 is not bad. I mean, look at the list they provided: Cooke S4/i and Panchro lenses, Zeiss Ultra Primes and Compact Primes, Red Primes...

I have not used this one. But I have used the hot rod PL mount several times and its a solid product. Being able to mount an S4 or other large cine lenses without support is pretty amazing. With new cameras coming out, the 5d/7d may see less work as technology gets better. This makes this product a pure specialty item, may have a little bit to do with the price.
