Pixelation Problem

To be fair, working in Avid or editing with footage not captured over firewire does not produce these chunks. Avid's DV codec interprets data differently (automatic chroma blur). Once "Final Cut Pro" is thrown into the equation, though, yes, there really is no question what the source is.

Yes, that is very true Policar. avid has a very good DV codec that applies the blur for you. But doesn't it seem strange that they would have that built into a dv codec when it only DVX footage shows this kind of artifacting? :)

Indeed Sharky it wasn't the DVX analog output, but Wilt noticed the same problem when out[utting into an NLE and finally stated explicitly: "However it does affect chroma keying considerably, I'm sorry to say; I would recommend against planning any detailed chroma-keying with DVX100 footage without performing careful tests first. Both the hue and saturation channels are affected by 60-times-across-the-picture fixed patterning" And that the "pixelisation"where I am talking about.

Indeed, Dv footage is not ideal to key, but if you know what you are doing, it can be done. But I don't think that the original poster was looking to key something. Here is something I shot with DVX, guy in red shot with DVX, background shot with 10D. I think it keyed pretty nicely. But I don't want to fight about it, I just don't understand why you are taking such a harsh defense to the DVX. Pretty much anything we say, you say, nope can't be done, or nope, this is only a problem with the DVX. Why don't you try one for yourself and see how it works :) It really isn't all that bad.

I never thought the problem was going to spawn this thread, wow...

When output to a DVD, it looks OK...some jaggin in quick movements occur, but i guess that is part of 24p DV...

the problem becomes more visiible when viewed fullscreen in quicktime...but the DVD looks fine.

Still the reds have some squares on them....I assume that its what you talk about.

one last thing....whta is the equivalent for chroma blur in FCP????

Thanks a lot guys

hmmm, gianpl, you shouldnt' be getting any jaggies with a 24p DVD. Are you rendering back to the dv codec or to an mpeg2 codec? Are you sure that the pulldown was removed correctly from the footage? Could you post some screen grabs?
Yes dv blown up to computer resolution 1280x1024 or higher will fall apart quickley. If you are wanting to watch the footage full screen on your computer it would help to uprezz the footage first in FCP (it will give you a slightly better image when played back in quicktime) but beware the giant file size as well.
You might try asking that question in the FCP forum, as I am not sure about the chroma blur in that NLE, but I am sure that there is one. Good luck.

I am having the same problem with saturated reds. The jaggies don't show up on television dvd but do if the i play the dvd on the computer. I am using vegas and have tried the chroma blur effect but it didn't seem to have any effect.
any other ideas? many thanks.

...the vegas filter does a terrific job in getting rid of this DV artifacting, with no damage to any other part of the footage.
Excuse me please, could you please advice me which filters and what kind of procedure do you using for get a rid that in Vegas? Just chroma blur or special treat? b/c I cannot get rid it completely...
