Pixel Blocking. Is anyone getting around this?

It seems like any time I try and color correct or grade I see crazy pixel blocking. I am bringing in my footage with Voltaic HD at the original resolution and using 422HQ.

Any suggestions?

Is the artifact appearing in the original footage? If so, then it's probably the well-known "mud" problem.

I see it in static camera situations so it's not the mud. It's the crap you see in dark areas and white walls...situations like that. I do see it in the files coming in from Voltaic a little bit but nothing like after color grading.

I did not like voltaic transfers. I found neoscene superior and even THAT at the highest quality setting ads some degradation from the original avchd file.

You can play the original MTS files with VLC.

As for editing, you might have to find another transcoding method. You'll probably hate the performance of editing AVCHD natively.

Is there a way to pull the original avchd file without any degradation?
Depends on what NLE you use. EDIUS 5.5 and Neo 2.5 work very well with original AVCHD files. Premiere Pro CS5 does as well, especially if you have a supported graphics card.

With one of those editors, there's pretty much no reason to bother converting files to another format.

Edius has "edge artifact" problems with removing the 60i wrapper from 1080 24p files from the GH1. Grass Valley is "working" on fixing it and at least they admitted to the problem. 720p GH1 files work fine in Edius.
