I took delivery of the Pix 240 last week.
Experimented on a non-critical non-broadcast shoot so I could theoretically afford to screw up with the new gear and not lose income.
This unit is a dream to use in conjunction with the AF-100. Okay, so why did I shell out over 3 grand for the Pix, 35 gb card and battery kit? Mainly because I have a broadcast client who would much prefer native DNxHD to ingest into his Avid. There are 4 flavors of DNxHD which you can record in.
I work with Pro Res and there are 4 flavors in that mode as well. Everyone's covered in my world.
The menu system is well thought out. It is very easy to navigate through and simple to find everything using the very robust scrolling dial. Huge, solid control buttons make operation similar to a classic record deck, Large stop. rewind, play, Ff and Rec buttons make operation pretty simple. You can trigger record from the deck or from the AF-100. The SDI signal coming out of the cam enables this. Getting to files for playback or deletion is even easier than the AF-100. Having a unit to play back in the director's hands is a plus.
Not really really crazy about the 5 inch monitor. It's not meant to enable critical viewing but I thought it would be a tad more color accurate than it is. Not bad tho. better really than the cam flipout.
Ii is a bit heavy if you're going to mount it to a rig and do handheld. This thing is built like a real broadcast device! so, there is some added weight to the chassis. No complaints really.
The audio is freaking amazing! Cleanest audio for video I have ever heard. A huge relief here. 2 xlr analog inputs or AES.
First impression - very very positive. More to come.
