PIP question

The picture-in-picture effect is easy enough. But when my picture-in-picture footage is actually a sequence, and I want to apply a re-position to the picture-in-picture/sequence, I'm not sure how to convert that sequence into a single media file that I can then add a single PIP to.

In After Effects I would pre-comp the two adjoining segments so they become one, and I could apply a single effect. But with Avid, how do I combine two segments into one, so I can add a single PIP effect. I've read about the "submaster" effect but I'm not getting it. I apply the submaster to V3 (I have background on V1, my PIP sequence on V2...and then the submaster on V3? But when I render, it doesn't seem to do anything).

EDIT!!!!! NEVERMIND! I'd delete this question if the bloody (but beloved) site would let me. But I guess I waited more than 5 seconds or something. Anyhow, maybe you can learn from my stupidity then. So applying the submaster DID have the desired result. It merged the clips in the sequence into a single media file, which I can then apply a single PIP effect to. But then I forgot to move the little video track viewer up a level (to V3), so I was only viewing V2 down. The submaster was working fine; I wasn't. And this probably makes no sense to anyone but me. Thank you.

Oh, and you have to COLLAPSE the submaster layer (V3) over the clips (V2) to get it ready to apply the single effect. Whew.

Select all the clips that you want to appear in a PIP--they have to be contiguous on the timeline, which I'm sure they already are. You can lasso the clips, or select them individually, adding them with the Control key (or is it Shift? Can't recall right now).

Anyway, with all your clips selected, find the PIP effect in the FX bin. While holding Alt (or Option on Mac), double-click the effect. The clips in the timeline will perform what is called in Avid parlance an "auto-nest" and the PIP will be applied to them. You'll see one long clip with a PIP effect on it then. You can then either double-click on the PIP with one of the Segment modes activated (either the red arrow or the yellow arrow), which will expand the nest, or you can can climb into the effect and look at that particular timeline all by itself.

Hope that makes sense...

EDIT: Fixed my keyboard mix-up...

Don't use Submaster and then render in this case. If you need to make changes, you're going to have to go one layer deeper and then re-render anyway. Auto-nesting is the bomb...

No problem! There are tons of application for that feature. You can use it with just about any effect, and by climbing into a matte key or title, you can replace the fill. The possibilities are pretty endless...
