Pinnacle????  Why is Vegas better?

Hi guys, I didn't know where to post this thread so I did here.

I'm about to buy a computer system from a dealer who is a Pinnacle reseller.

I was wondering if any of you thoughtful people out there can give me some "Why Vegas is better" ammo so I can fight off the constant ramblings by these VERY pushy yet reasonably priced computer dealers. ;D

Pros for Vegas:

24p. HD. Dolby 5.1. Convenient effects templates. Compatibility with SoundForge and ACID. Price.

Edition, however, is laid out better, supports dual monitors better, has a source window, the effects editors are much easier to use, the sub-pixel editing is smoother and looks better in the preview, and has background rendering. Far more customizable. Logging and capturing are lightyears more sophisticated, the DVD burn from the timeline (and authoring tool in general) is better. The advantages Vegas had with broadcast tools (vector displays, etc.) are negated with the Liquid Edition upgrade.

Both have things the other can't do, but I'd rather do all my intial cutting in Edition and then use Vegas to finish up the sound. I use both, and it's worth the money.

I'm kind of biased here cause I got the Pinnacle DV500 and it gave me nothing but frustration. Pinnacle stuff always makes me nervous because it seems all they do is buy software from other companies, promote the crap out of it & then bail on it when they go to something new. Look at the whole DV500/Pro One thing. Edition is really software form a German company called Fast, I have heard lot's of good things about it but I have no idea how it's being developed. It seems Pinnacle is not afraid to lead customers down dead end product paths & that would make me think twice. Also, I've used some Fast products (Video Machine) & was not impressed, but I have not yet used Edition so take that for what it's worth.

All NLE's pretty much do the same stuff these days & it's mostly a matter of personal preference. From my perspective here are the main traits of each major NLE; Need rocking audio tools -Vegas. Need really seamless After Effects integration - Premiere. Own a Mac - FCP. best post house compatibility/off line support - Avid. Bottom line each one of these tools will get the job done for ya - it's mostly a matter of which one you like.

My favorite of the bunch is Vegas because of the work flow. Once you get your head wrapped around it (which usually takes a week or so ) it is just so fast, easy and fun to use. The 24p support and 5.1 audio are another huge plus, no NLE even comes close to touching Vegas audio tools. I say try out the demo's and get the one you like best.

I'm not inclined to disagree -- there are other disadvantages to Pinnacle, including an utter lack of support (good luck getting a return phone call or e-mail). I'm not out to be a Pinnacle cheerleader, but I do like Edition, and I think it's overall a better editor than Vegas -- except as noted. And Vegas has an uncertain future as to whether or not Sony will continue with it.

So, like I said, I use both -- and Premiere is simply no longer even a question.

Here is my Vegas/Sony theory. Sony has had tons of success with cameras, monitors and computers but they just have not been able to get an NLE to catch on. I think they finally bit the bullet and bought one that has a very good reputation and was getting popular. I think they are trying to do something like Apple and FCP - make a turnkey edit system that will be able to handle high def cheaply - because the more people that shoot and edit in high def, the more people need those spendy high def Sony cameras. It's a win win for Sony, even if they give the software away people will still need to shoot the stuff on high def & I think the profit margins on them cameras is a lot better than what they make on computers and software. Also the more high def that's out there, the more Sony high def t.v.'s people need to watch it on.

From what I've heard Sony has good intentions with Vegas, They have left the Madison, Wisconsin development team intact & have been very vocal with the fact they don't want to screw Vegas up. I think they have big plans for Vegas and they sure have the resources to make almost anything happen. Of course this is only a theory, I could be wrong.

Sony COULD develop Vegas into *the* NLE, but time will tell.

Suggestions for them --

Better (that is to say, ACTUAL) dual-monitor support.  

A more customizable interface.

Better effects editors.

Background rendering.

Better DVD authoring.

You know, all those things Edition has that Vegas doesn't.  Give me those (and a number of other things), and Edition hits the trash can.

My biggest problem with Pinnacle is the sound. After all is edited and rendered, the audio track is always longer and worst of yet is the out of sync that happens constantly when outputting. As others have posted prior, good luck getting support from them on any of these issues.

Wow. I find that a number of my statements above re: Vegas have been addressed in Version 5 and DVDA2.
