Pink dots when projected...

I dont think this is the same as the pink square problem in the thread a few below me... I burned a copy of my dvd and viewed it on the projector ill be using to premiere the film. At first it looked like the screen was physically dirty, and then during a scene that was very white, it seemed like there were a bunch of very small pink squares. I rubbed the screen but that didnt do anything (Screen is actually just a white wall). I viewed the footage on my high def TV and didnt see anything, so thats good, but i still need to premiere on this projector. Coudl the project lens just be dirty? What would other causes of this be? Any ideas?

It could be dirt on the lens of the projector, or if it's an LCD it could be dead or stuck pixels. How distracting are the dots? There is not way to fix it, unless the projector is under warrante, so you just have to ask yourself, will anybody else see the little pink dots? I tend to notice little discrepencies in my work way more than anybody else ever will, and I'm sure it is this way with most artists.

Scharky hit the nail on the head. If the dots are very sharp points of light then it's probably a stuck pixel and there's not much you can do for it short of replacing the projector. If the dots are fuzzy/out of focus, it could be dust/dirt on the lcd panel or back of the lens. What model projector is it?

If the pixels are pink, there's no way you have a dead pixel. A dead pixel will be pure red, green or blue, providing you have an LCD projector. With DLP single chip, there's a different story. How does your projector looks like with another DVD? Is it ok? You coukd have a sampling problem - try to change your DVD compression settings to something better (like Hi quality VBR 2 passes) or even better, use a DV copy.

The dots were very fuzzy, and it was not be just being anal, it was VERY distracting and youd have to be blind not to notice. I am going to burn the dvd again and try it on that project and see what happens and also bring in another mass produced dvd and see what that looks like. Ill also bring some lens cleaner and see if that fixes it. If not, ill use a different screening room. I'm glad i checked this out before hand. I would have FLIPPED out on the day of the premiere!

I work with projectors all the time, and I've seen something similar to what you're talking about. The pink (or purple, that I've seen) fuzzy dots are usually dirt or dust built up inside the lens of the projector- which usually requires sending it in to a shop for cleaning. It's most common on our Proxima models. Definitely check the outside of the lens, and clean that off as much as possible. But if it's internal, it's not an easy thing to fix.
If you can, just watch your DVD on a CRT or LCD computer monitor, and zoom in on the image if you can. If anything is there, it'll show up.
If you're having DVD issues, maybe you could bring in the camera and send the video directly to the projector that way.
