PilotFly H2 Gimbal

the "walking and running" video looks very good. i asked the youtuber that posted the video if it was stabilized in PP and he said no. i see other videos of the Pilotfly and they show the up & down steps that all the gimbals show especially the smaller handheld ones vs a bigger and heavier gimbal like the Ronin that usually shows less up & down movement.

i had the Came-TV Single for about a week and had brutal problems (bad sample mostly i think) with it so i sent it back for a refund. i am still interested in a small gimbal though even though i have the original Ronin.

anyone have anything to say about Piotfly as a company as to reliability quality of the product and customer service?

Don't confuse the PilotFly H2 with the older H1 series which did not have encoders.
The H2 is in Pre-Order so I doubt you've seen videos.
The only 3rd party use I've seen of the H2 other than what I've posted is from Dave Dougdale of Learning DSLR who is in the process of getting a review ready.
I doubt you've seen H2 video. Otherwise do post links.

Dave Dougdale. No obvious up/down to me.

He noted a horizon issue in this video which he states he since fixed with some help from the manufacturer. Walking is very smooth but you can see the horizon line issue.

Pilotfly's own test. you can see waking motion but it's a 140mm lens on MFT camera. Not something I'd ever do.

Looks like PilotFly H2 was testing a few weeks back. Lens likely fully wide 16mm. I some minor issues that might be fixable with improved PID settings. Given this was a few weeks back and they first sending out review units they were probably still tweaking settings. Probably still are given Dougdale's issue.

those videos you posted look very good. they appear to have less up and down vs all the other small gimbals. what do you think accounts for this since it doesn't natively have an axis to compensate for the steps?

It's in Japanese but between the 3 and 7 minutes mark he seems to be alluding to how it handles walking. Seems to be showing techniques to hold it to avoid the up/down motion.

Looks like he's addressing how he handles walking/running with the drone. Shows his technique and then actual video. Note that this seems to be specific to two handed setup. He has it inverted and at a slight angle which, I suspect, allows the camera to move on the axis to counter the stepping motion. I don't doubt the encoder helps.

I mostly shoot with larger cameras these days, having moved on from DSLRs and mirror-less cameras. I had the GH4 and sold it, hated the skin tones, no matter how the camera was setup. With a weigh capacity of 4.8lbs, I think the H2 would support my C100 stripped down to just the body, battery and my light 10-18mm STM IS lens, but I know that like the Ronin M, this is really designed to work with DSLRs and mirror less cameras.

1. Would you agree that a C100 MKI would probably be pushing this? I am calculating a weight of about 34 oz. for the body, 8.1oz for a BP-955 battery and 15oz for the EOS 10-18mm STM IS lens, a total of 57.1oz or 3.56lbs. Not sure if the C100 would physically work on the H2 for the same reasons it barely works on the Ronin M, too tall and or too physically large? Thoughts?

2. Assuming trying to make this work with the C100 MK1 is not a good idea, what would be the hot mirror less or DSLR camera to run on this? Something with decent auto focus, decent colors (not sure I can abide by Sony's colors at all), a not FF sensor (Already have 5D MKIII and T3i) I am putting together my reel with a lot of 5D MKII and MKIII work on it and I am amazed at how soft it all looks once you live with C100/300 and higher for a few years. Since I have mainly Canon EOS glass and sold all of M43 lenses with the GH4, would prefer to get something that works with EOS lenses ideally.

Advice welcome.

Canon 1DX Mark II.

I am waiting for this myself. I will admit that Sony's color is really getting better. I am quite happy with the RX10 II for specialty work and maybe for a gimble like the H2. The GH5 holds a lot of hopes for me though. The skin tones that came out of V-log are very nice. My hope is that they will be able to re-create this color science within the presets along with 10bit color. Nothing crazy at NAB this year so I am just waiting since there will be no NX-2.

Dave Dugdale in his review made one point which really stuck with me: all gimbles perform much better when you don’t come anywhere close to the manufacturer’s capacity limits. One half the limits is always nice.
