Picture Quality Question

I have some footage that looks beautiful, other than I have a reflection of my camera's little yellow "record" light in a window. To move it out of frame, I pushed in using the PAN/CROP tool. As you all know, however, this affects the quality of the footage, most notably it tends to "pixelate" the images.

Is there a plug-in that can correct this, or something else I can use w/in Vegas to avoid the lower quality in picture?

Thanks,

Jeff

It's near the top. I filmed with Anamorphic and I'm bringing it in using the Widescreen 1.21 setting. Is there a way to get an even wider aspect... like on HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS.

Thanks,

Jeff

Do you know what the aspect ratio should be set at? I filmed, as I said, in Anamorphic but I'd like to get more of a letterbox look with the wide aspect.

Thanks

If you just want to "letterbox" the 16:9 down to 2.35:1, set it to crop at 720x360 (or 720x306, depending on whether you'll be using square pixels, or keeping it at the 1.2121)

I suppose you want to ask me which is which for which, don't you. I can NEVER remember. I'm terrible with numbers. The only reason I know I have ten fingers is because they match my ten toes.

You can also just create a mask and render that over your final file, which will create the bars/effedt as well.

Also, if you're shooting anamorphic, what camera are you using? If it's the DVX, you can turn that record lamp off, so this is never an issue in the future (I always have the front lamp off on mine). Otherwise, do yourself a favor & throw a small piece of black electrical tape over it ... again, to avoid this issue in the future.

oh sweet crap! The Pan/Crop tool pixellates the image??

I've been getting really nasty pixellation along the edges of my talent when they're wearing blue against just about any background. I thought that this was just the DV codec working it's magic.

I'm a real newbie, but can I ask how badly the Pan/Crop tool usually degrades the image? I've just been using the 16x9 preset to letterbox my 4x3 footage. (I've also been moving the 16x9 area up and down to frame things better in each clip). Am I a damn fool?

It only pixelates if you zoom in beyond the resolution of the event.

With DV, it's pretty easy to do, because DV is low-resolution.

But if your'e zooming in on a 5MP photo, you'll go a long way before you see pixelization.

Cropping without zooming will not pixelate the image in any way.

As for the blue problem, try applying a chroma blur.

For photos, I use the rule of thumb to never zoom in further than 720x480 ... so I always ask clients for shots that are at LEAST 2x that large, to give me room to move within the shot using the pan/crop.

Knightowl,
To avoid zooming in/cropping, you can make a mask in Photoshop of just the piece you want to cover up. Save out a copy of the frame you want to fix. Then, in Photoshop, match the color you want to paint out and do so on another layer. Soften the edges of the smaller piece so that it blends better, dump the BG image and save out the new piece with alpha channel.
Back in your NLE, drop the new still frame over your original scene and it effectively "paints out" the blemish.
Hope this helps.
Ken

Is there anything else in the frame that's the exact shade of yellow?

If not, you can use the Secondary CC plugin to replace the colour with a neighboring colour to help hide it.
