Having gone to 2.0 Im building my profiles again

Nirv - you linked to a PDF about them - can you repeat that link

In general the languae of PP is strange to me

for example - 'Colour Level' - I would call saturation

is there a 'dictionary' for this

can someone explain some of the other functions in Eglish

I think im across Knee Athough Slope is a little mystical to me

I will check out the links at the bottom of the PDFs

I really dont care what your profile settings are.. its why they are like that

For example one may observe too much saturation in an unaltered profile and therefore choose to reduce the color level

I found the link from Nirv http://www.sony-asia.com/microsite/professional/hdv/pdf/HVR-Z7_S270Tutorial_e7.pdf (doesnt work form me right now)

And this (p30) has some stuff.. http://www.sony.co.uk/res/attachment/file/62/1237483683462.pdf

Id still be very interested in comments on understanding pricutre profiles from first principals.

I suppose the ideal is to take the camera out of the box and shoot.

We take that image and see what we dont like then fix it using specific approaches and choices..

Here is some fine sony language..

Black Level.
As the name indicates, this setting adjusts the black level ofthe image. As an image effect, you can emphasize black tocreate a type of image that would give a hard impression, oryou can weaken black to give the image a soft impression.Shifting BLACK LEVEL toward the minus directionemphasizes the black color in the image, while changingthe level toward the plus direction would weaken the blackcolor. For example, if you want to simulate an old film, orcapture winter morning fog, the black level set value should

I say..
Black is black - 000 you cant have a weak black,

So WTF does black level do?

Just clip the image eg make everything below maybe 5 go black, (with a -ve setting)
Or render (with a positve level) everything a maybe 3 or below as 3

either would be undesirable to me!

Or does is crush/stretch the curve in the black shadow areas?

.. which could be desirable
