Picture of the elusive RIGHT side of HVX200!

this is the first pic. i see.. and i'm already sad. the view finder is too high above the lens line, completely against my operating.

..its still a prototype.. even the DVX has numbers on the zoom ring.. im assuming thell have a numbering scheme on it when the final product is released. well have to wait and see but id assume so

so you think it will still change even though all these promo pics look as if they are official?

This was at the bottom *Features and specifications are subject to change without notice.

Is that a radiation symbol on the handle in the center?

Looks good, otherwise.
The radiation symbol is to warn people about the nuclear power supply used to store P2 data. It's a low-power nuke, so there shouldn't be much danger, but that darn EPA makes 'em put a notice on anyway.

Actually, what you're seeing there is the handle zoom speed switch (low/middle/high), a black switch set against an orange background.

Yeah, but the first time you hold it, you'll understand why the viewfinder is high above the lens line. It works *perfectly* for hand-held footage. I think it's a great ergonomic change, although maybe it won't suit everyone.

Is it me, or does the shot of the guy holding the camera make it look like a really bloody massive camera!?
The camera is bigger and beefier, but I don't know that it quite qualifies as "really bloody massive"... :) It's not a LOT bigger than the DVX, just beefed up in most dimensions.

Bigger is better :-)

I'm glad it's kind of chunky. Lets hope that the NLE makers release some relevant updates to their programs before the camera is released. I've just had the major dissappointment of finding that although Sony have been demonstrating an xdcam capable version of Vegas 6, that they didn't put the feature into the release version :-(

Now I could be wrong, but P2 records to the MXF format too doesn't it? So if Sony get on with it and release Vegas 6 with MXF capability like tomorrow we would already have an HVX200 compatible editor ready!

FCP Support for P2

FCP Support for P2

According to Apple, Final Cut 5 supports Panasonic's P2 and HDV....what supports means....?

you are wrong. this camera does not record HD in HDV...it records in DVCPRO HD - which is native in FCP 4.5 (actually it's the HD that FCP HD is referring to)...and also why this camera is such an amazing piece of technology.

The P2 is just a card (think compact flash) and file scheme it has nothinig to do with the codec used.

Ummm, I don't remember saying that it recorded in HDV. I was talking about MXF compatibilty which is a totally different thing. MXF is a file wrapper and can contain video of any format. In the case of P2 I think you will find that the HVX records DVCproHD in an MXF file wrapper as it will contain a low resolution proxie file and metadata all in the same file.

Final Cut Pro does have DVCproHD ability. But it does not have MXF capability, and neither does the latest FCP 5 release (that ruffled a few feathers in the xdcam community even though it was promised). And it is MXF capability that you will require in order to utilise the NLE working benefits of the GVX200 and xdcam. Not DVCproHD codecs.

Long time reader.......first time poster.

I haven't heard anyone mention these improvements to the camera verses the DVX100. I'm THRILLED that they moved the audio level knobs to the back of the camera. I do a LOT of handheld during receptions and have accidently messed up the audio because of the placement of the knob. Good call Panny.

Another thing that seems to bother some is the SNORK viewfinder. It looks strange but I LIKE it. Again I do a lot of handheld, so having the viewfinder another inch or so higher than what we are used to in the DVX is an ergodynamic advantage. This will allow my elbows to be tucked tighter into my sides in a more natural position while NOT having to lift the camera higher to see into the viewfinder, thus the balance should be better.

regards,
Robert
