Hello All,

Just shot this short film sunday... 12 pages in 4 hours (not by my choice!!!) Had very little time for lighting and had to use and position mostly the natural lighting there (in a club).

Just wanted to see what you guys thought and also any suggestions for post.

Here are the pics.

They look good. I really like using avalible light for shots. But of course most people think that my stuff is to dark. Keep it up.

Thanks for the nice comments guys!
Drew599: But the problem with using natuaral light sometimes (as on this shoot)... was that their wasn't enough light and thus my DOF was severly affected. Basically is was hard(er) to get some good low DOF shots.

Maybe someone has some suggestions with settings on the DVX or the like to get better control of DOF in darker conditions? (for future ref)

Thanks.

Nice. I like the colors, close-ups, and DOF. Yes, it is dark, but from the looks of it your short is not a cheerful romantic comedy ;D Dark might work for ya.

Good stuff.

Other than the second shot (which does look like a movie ;D)  the other three looked very amature. The first shot is underexposed The third picture has distracting qualities. And the fourth is ok, needs a tad more light. But the first pic angle says B-MOVIE. Sorry if I'm a bit harsh, but im only trying to help you improve your quality.

Cheers

PS lots of leather. Seems Irish. 8)

Working on the long end of the lense does make it a little hard to work with natural light. Just bring a small table lamp with you and find some place close to the actors to either bounce the light off of a near by wall. Or place it in the shot with them to give people a feel for the lighting of the room. I always hate it when I see lighting in a movie or whatever and think, "Where in the hell is that coming from". Have fun.

Really love the composition in frame 2 - observation of the 1/3s always pays off! Good color there too. Just a little motion blur... what shutter did you use?

Everyone keeps complimenting the 2nd frame, but that to me indicates the worst downfall of video (as opposed to film). I think that special care needs to be taken to avoid things like the incredible glare on his forehead when shooting with video. Film would naturally soften that so I think he needs to be powdered (heavily... especially if he's sweating) to try and off-set the hotspot. Personally, I think the 4th frame looks the best. True, most of them are dark, but are even and seem natural for their setting.

All in all, nice work.

You know, after reading everyones post slowly, i was questioning why does everyone think the 2nd frame is the best. It's not, the lighting doesn't fit the scene very well and the light it way too hard on the forehead. I agree with the post before this, the 4th one is the best, the only thing i would comment is to actually lower or gell the fill light of whatever is hitting the left side of his face.

Thanks, the shutter was kept at 1/48 for the whole shoot (nothing special there).

Its quite interesting to see the dichotomy of opinions on the 2nd frame... I'm surprised by the love hate relationship of it.

But I think what will sell that shot is the composition and color, and the fact that he has a small hotspot will not really matter (no????)

But I agree with the post where the actor should either have a bit of powder or I should have lowered the intensity of the light a smidge... not to give excuses.. but here is one anyway... I barely had anytime to even position a light, yet also to powder an actor or gel a light.

And is that first shot really cheesy? if so, I did do another "normal take" so i can always not use this one.

Re: Pics of short film I just shot "A Canard

In my criticism of frame #2, I did fail to mention the composition which I think is really quite nice... and also lit very well (my issue with the hotspot aside).

In response to some of the posts about the angle of frame #1, I would tend to agree... it seems like it's done from and odd angle for no other reason than to be at an odd angle. If you're going for the effect of adding "power" to a character by shooting an up-shot, I would bring it up a bit and make the angle a bit more subtle.

I guess the question you should ask yourself is "why did I shoot it from this angle"... if you can justify it to yourself (beyond just saying you thought it looked neat) then leave it in. Otherwise, I'd go for the more normal angle --- can you post a frame of that take as well? I'm curious.

I really like the last shot. Did you alter the color at all. Or use any FX (Magic Bulet, ect)?

Actually, I like all the frames except the first one, I just think the angle is bad. The other frames seem good enough to keep me interested. If I had to guess, I'd guess that this is a threatening scene, the older doing the threatening. The third shot perfectly accentuates a look of detached fear, but then again, it could be a happy drinking scene. This is just me thinking. My favorite shot though, is the last. I feel it has a Luc Besson look. There's a very similar shot in Leon, when Leon says he's a cleaner, and Mathilda says "cool.", and he gives that slow look up, I absolutely love it, and you've captured it perfectly. I think it looks amazing, good work.

No color correction done at all yet.. These frame grabs are strickly taken right from the DVX100.
