Picking up my 40 today

well guys...BOB did, so did some others, so why not me?
yes, a thread about buying the HMC40!
hehehe, well...you won't find any TRACKING info in this post..although if you count Miami's bad traffic, i guess we can do that.

I've been researching for over 4 months on this camera...read good reviews, bad reviews, reviews that made no sense. saw low prices, normal prices, and hilarious prices (someone wanted 2500$ for the camera and got pissed when i burst out laughing about it...I'm like "dood, MSRP is about 2000$!)

One funny thing is, i have never, EVER seen the camera in person...saw videos/pictures/drawings/hi-res/low-res you name it...but never actually held it on my hand. Well, yesterday was the day. i happen to be part of some google Final Cut Group based in Miami, FL and they had a meet yesterday at some random video store..

i walked in and obviously i started gazing at all the high end equipment...tripods/cameras/videocams....HMC150's/HMC70's/HVX200 but nowhere did i see the HMC40...until bam...there it was...in a little corner...hiding from me.
i immediately walked to the salesmen and asked...no.let me rephrase that..DEMANDED i be shown the camera.
Everything i was expecting...all theory came to practice. as if i have had the camera for weeks, i knew what every single button did...how the menu structure worked.

i know, i know..TOO MUCH!
asked for a price and was told, in a laughing voice "whatever BHphoto sells it for..i sell cheaper..bout 20$ cheaper." Hmm...i was willing to pay BH full price just 2 hrs before...and didn't do it for some reason....THERE IS A GOD!

i wanted to pay for it ,go home running and play with it...but no, "cash register is closed" they said.

now, I'm here....posting in a forum..to an audience that might give 2 cents about this kind of stuff.

all i can say, time is not passing by fast enough. 2:30pm will come..i will gladly clock out (unless some prick, from afar decides that he wants to try and connect his web cam to his microwave and connect wireless to his HOME router in DC from Miami while using VPN to check his corp email on a server that is DEAD with a firewall that blocks everything!)

they time is now...

*sigh*

All I can say is that, if I owned that retail store, I would have re-opened the cash register for business, if that was all that was keeping me from making another $2K sale (and actually, we did that often in stores, large and small, I worked in growing up).

It is a fine camera. You should enjoy it. Hope it goes well.

There was probably something more to it than that. Some reason they couldn't easily re-open the register. When was the last time you walked into one of those places that carries high end gear (for anything, not just video), and the people weren't excited about getting a product into your hands however they could?

Its not like a typical retail job...Everyone I run into in those places like the gear.

It may well be that because of the meeting, they don't have any sales at that time.

Just a guess...

That would be a silly reason. Having been to tons of videographer meetings locally we always had the ability to purchase any gear at the store that hosted the events.

Heck.. it's part of the reason they host the event!

Not so silly, I went to the "Smart Madness Car Gathering" and the people at Smart Madness made it clear, they are not open for business that day. Their reason was that they wanted to focus to be on the gathering, not business. In their case, I assume that they figure that people would come back to purchase stuff on a different day.

It's all up to the store that hosts the event.

I'm curious how you got it cheaper than B&H, when the people you did buy it from HAD to add sales tax being a brick & mortar location. I mean. Thats got to be at LEAST $150 in tax..

Their store isn't in someones basement, is it?!

Unlike some other countries, the US does not have a Federal Sales Tax. However many states do have a sales tax, some do, some don't have this sales tax.

In the words on one bumper sticker, "Taxation with Representation isn't that great either!" :)

Well, Texas, for example, is very forgiving of sales tax for filmmakers. It is pretty easy to dodge that hit in the Lone Star state. So for anyone in Texas looking to buy, that is an option that most video stores (and I don't mean Best Buy) are aware of and prepared to help with.

As long as we are waxing eloquence on the HMC; after having it for a while, the thing I like most about it is that it is the ultimate guerilla cam that still has pro features and great IQ.

Congrats,
Grant

I think I might even purchase a second one or when I learn more aboot how to use it better, I may buy a SONY HXRNX5U to help me shoot weddings and conventions and use both cameras since they are both AVCHD cams.
