Photos from the "old days"

Some dude is showing off a car (Zaporozhets ZAZ 966) his mother won in a lottery in 1972.

A Soviet fantasy meal : chicken soup, mashed potatoes with a cutlet (a meat & bread clump, pan fried), a fruit drink (random fruits boiled with water, then chilled), a sliced boiled egg with tomatoes and dark rye bread, a muffin. To the left, there's a wallet and a bill. It was called a "dinner complex" and could cost 35c-50c in high school and factory cafeterias; up to 2.15r-2.50r in the stand alone diners. An average monthly wage was was around 100r in the early 1970's, 120r in the late 1970's.

lol. My favorite soup/borscht is something called szczawiowa. Sorrel and boiled eggs.

A protein powerhouse if you add some kielbasa (just a small chunk, or 2-3 cut pieces, no overload).

Ah, the Lenin-in-a-mausoleum cake. 1998.

...Participation in the march was not voluntary. As one can see from this classic photo from 1968, taken in Lvov.

Maybe or not that's why she's grumpy but what strikes me most is 'Participation in the march was not voluntary'.

//( A general non-related observation: A great place to shoot photos would be on a farm and with farm workers [r.e: one of your photos]. No shortage of potential shots there. I worked summers on one for 5 yrs. Thinking back now of the potential photos. :) )

The "best" part of the May Day Parade was the majority of people getting together for some drinking afterwards. Folks would get home at 2-4 in the afternoon and, with May, 2 also being an off day, one did not have to worry about the hangover. Those with summer homes would head to the countryside, especially if the weather was warm.*

The girl in the photo was clearly told to get dressed in her best attire, given the balloons and then ordered to do a lot of walking. Considering that she was under ten years old, her imbibing of potent alcoholic beverages was limited to less than a gallon. The photo itself became a meme during the internet age. People have been trying to find this girl ever since then. According to some rumors, she now lives in a place even worse than the 1960's Ukraine - Canada.

*I was PM'ing an ex-classmate of mine earlier today. She still lives in the old country, just retired. She says, "We're having our ninety second straight day of February".

I hesitate replying in the current condition I'm in ;) -> You are a wealth of knowledge and without elaborating a.t.m and getting into stories... thank-you. You are one cool dude. Can I say 'that'? Lollll. -> :)

Canned pate paste [pasztet] was something I liked a lot on fresh bread...has a unique taste but it's actually pretty disgusting to think about what's in it.

паштет - I will buy an occasional liverwurst at a local supermarket. It was a rare delicacy in the USSR. Most common was beef, chicken, pork mixes. With an unhealthy portion of jellied lard on top of it. Supposedly, it was first given to the military but, after the 3 year expiration date, it was moved to the regular stores.

Another delicacy was the hunter sausage, aka Jägerwurst. Those were very rare in stores. One needed блат to get them.

Maria Sharapova's family is from the Southeastern Belarus, only a few miles across the border from Chernobyl in Western Ukraine. When her mother got pregnant, the family moved to Russia because they were afraid of this.

PS. When the initial rescue work was over, Chernobyl hosted the "concert for the rescuers, where many a top Soviet star performed. From everywhere I read, there was no effects of the radiation on the performers.
