photoflex softboxes / speed ring question: are they supposed to spin freely?

new to soft boxes / speed rings etc. question: is the speed ring supposed to be "loose"? as in, is it supposed to spin freely, even when the light is attached securely?

I can't find a knob or lever or anything to "lock down" the spinning of the ring once the light is in place.

seems like it might be hard to get the light to hold its position when you're actually using it.

fyi - using photoflex silverdome boxes, and their usual speedrings.

Yup thats normal. I've never had issues with it holding though.

It's supposed to do that so you can change your softbox from portrait to landscape... or anything in between. You'll have times when you want a fading cut across your talent and you'll need the box at an angle to the light falls off the face and the shoulder at the same time.

I started with photoflex for stills... nowadays when I get a speed ring that doesn't rotate, I get all confused and trembly.
