GH5 Photo mode on GH5s

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to know what the GH5s is like as a stills camera? Do you reckon it's best to avoid the stills mode on the GH5s altogether and just treat it as a video camera, or is it's stills mode actually usable?

Can you notice that the GH5s' stills resolution is significantly reduced when compared to seeing stills from the regular GH5?

10 megapixels equates to 3872 x 2592 pixels or a 12.91" x 8.64" print according to Google. That would be slightly larger than US letter, or around A4 size. Not super large.

BTW, I know that the Canon XC10 only took 12 megapixel stills and they looked ok, although not as defined or sharp looking as my Lumix G7 stills, as an example of another camera with a lower megapixel count for stills.

Depends how big of prints you need and if you need to crop in post.

For most applications its just fine. Better dynamic range and noise performance than the GH5. For trickier lighting situations its going to excell more than most M43 cameras, but for studio stuff its not as good.

I have made larger prints than google suggests from 6mp cameras. If you have a proper workflow with a good tool chain, 24x36 inch prints should be no problem. Not the place to go into great detail here, but it is no problem with the right software. There are a lot of factors that go into this statement (of course). The biggest issue is how clean is the image? Highly compressed jpeg in dim light with lots of compression artifacts will give a poor print. A clean TIFF with good lighting and focus nailed on the exact spot desired will yield a good print.

I was really surprised by the quality I got out of the GH5S. The biggest difference I could tell came from the 14-bit RAW files, which take a really hard grade.
