photo from video mode setting?

I was doing some night test (video mode) with the 5d mkiii last night and was doing a auto focus when the camera took a photo of what I was filming. Didn't know it could take one in video mode? I'm just learning the camera step by step. Here is the shot it took.

It's a feature & is described in the manual. It's not terribly useful as it interrupts the video but it takes a photograph at up to 5760x3840 full stills resolution rather than the 1920x1080 video image.

Not useful? It's very useful to me, especially when running&gunning and taking pics all at the same time. Way more useful than the pretty horrid D800 implementation.

I said not terribly useful not that it had no use whatsoever. The two major drawbacks are firstly that it interrupts the video recording (although audio recording does continue). The second drawback is that the camera settings will be whatever you are using for video & a 1/50 or 1/60 shutter speed may not be suitable for your subject & the image may end up blurred.

^ that (i.e. I always end up with blurred photographs when I try this, 1/50 is quite slow for most stills)

Those are not drawbacks if you compare it to D800.

The video recording is not completely interrupted as it doesn't stop it and you don't have to restart. This way you can sync up sounds, take a still and everything is still synced. The shutter is EXTREMELY easy to change, just flick it to whatever you want. If the image looks good, then a still should be good too. At 1/50 you can press the shutter down a bit and take two shots instead of one to maximize the changes of a good shot.

This is WAY WAY WAY better than a camera that takes an 1920x1080 HD "still" without interrupting anything or the way D800 works where you can take a still but the settings will always be completely wrong as they are different in video/stills mode.

I do a lot of stills and filming at the same time and 5d mark III beats up other cams that offer both.
