Photo flex is gone

Reported in Lighting Rumors and confirmed by a trip to their website, Photoflex has gone out of business. Although somewhat more photography oriented, they made lots of very decent products used in video as well. I haven't heard the reasons for the closure, but this gives us one less option for the gear they marketed.......sad.

Wow, I just bought some umbrellas and softboxes from Photoflex - very decent quality. A California company with many good products. Definitely a loss.

Surprised but not surprised. Their stuff was good quality, but they were having to compete with no-name imitations of their products that were 1/5 the price or lower.

Hard to say what's going on. The linked article says that most likely the current owners of Photoflex are gone, but the brand is being sold to some buyer/company who will just use the name. Who knows what this means for the product line and quality down the road. I imagine that if the current product mix was profitable, Photoflex would never have gone out of business in the first place. So it may seem logical that there will be changes under new management - what those are going to be, I don't have the faintest idea. Could be that the quality drops - or goes up! - or product mix changes or maybe they gain more marketing/advertising muscle or anything else. This btw. is a good example why you should buy on quality, not simply brand name, because anybody can buy the brand name and slap it on any old product and it means less than nothing... look what happened with Polaroid - the name was sold and then a bewildering variety of products of varying quality were being marketed under that name - what does that name mean at that point...? Nothing, that's what. So the Photoflex name may live on, but as for what that means for consumers, we have no idea. In other words, the original OP was quite right - Photoflex is gone, fast, slow or medium, but gone, though the name may live on.
