Phones Jack Inop?

I have a shiny new DVX 100a (2 days old) and I just plugged headphones ( 2 seperate sets that work on my XL1s) into the phones jack on the back of the unit, and all I get is some low level hiss. It doesn't matter if I am recording or playing back, I can see diflection to the red on the levels meters, and the audio is great when the tape is uploaded to the computer or connected to a TV. Do I have a bad cam? The audio switches are: INPUT 1 & 2 on the front of the cam are at the MIC position, and the first 2 buttons under the LCD screen are at the INT (L) and INT (R) positions, and the MIC POWER + 48V switches are in the off position. Also the audio dials are centered. Please help....

Yes I get a hiss on the right side of my headphones like this when I have them connected to my ZR-60 - dunno wtf is going on.

I too would like some explanation

Do you have your headphone volume up? It's on the top of the cam under the handle. You may have already checked this, but other than the cam being broken its the only thing I can think of. I say this, because you are using the onboard mic, and so all of the circuitry is onboard, so if there is a problem with that, then it is onboard....if turning up the volume doesn't work that is....

THANK YOU!!!!! THAT WAS IT!!!!!!! ( And my GF thanks you because I was starting to get hard to be around...) THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!

The DVX100A features a amplified headphones out, the jack of hell, that while let you monitor sound with cheap headphones, ruin the quality for those who really want to hear what's going on.

You can use the RCA out's though and plug your phones there. The sound will be 10x cleaner.

If Hiss is all you are getting, make sure you have your volume up, it's the buttonson top of the cam, near the LCD.

Good Luck!

While I have folks on here that know what they are talking about, I have another question... I tried to hook up a wireless mic to the cam using a RCA to mini plug attached to the chanel 1 or 2 input / output under the S- Video jack, but the camera doesnt see it. In the manual on page 58 I found " It is not possible to the audio signals if video signals are not input to the S-Video IN/OUT connector" Is there a way to go from a mono 1/8 mini plug to the XLR connector, or is there some other way to get the audio into the cam? I am shooting a wedding on the second, and was going to Mic the preacher..... Joe

You can get a converter cable from minijack to XLR at a video or music instrument store (I just gone one like that last Friday). Going form 1/8" to mini = couple of bucks.

Hey, no problemo - at least you don't have to unlearn the 'old dvxuser' like the rest of us....

I don't believe you can use the RCA jacks for input unless you are in VCR mode. You'll need to convert your cable to XLR I believe.

That was today's trial and error. For those this info will help, here it is. I went to Radio Shack and picked up a converter to go to XLR with the wireless mic's 1/8 mini. RS# 274-017. The problem is when the signal goes through the converter (which has a matching XFRMR in it) you loose a bunch of signal. With the lav on the lapel, I can't get enough signal for good audio, only about 4 little bars with the input dials at max. So, plan B for the wedding is use the DVX to get stereo of the string quartet using 2 XLR mics on stands, and use the XL1s for the groom's wireless lav. Anyone with a better idea? The XL1s has a 1/8 mini input, and you can get full diflection of the audio meters if you want.
