Phantom Power

Hey I got a 48V Phantom Power Supply but I don't quite understand it.

Do I hook the Mic to the Phantom, then hook the Phantom to the DVX?

Do I put batteries in it as well?

A bit more detail would be helpful. Phantom power where, on your mic?

Phantom power means you don't need separate power. The device you are plugging into will supply the power provided you have the switch set properly. For example, plug phantom powered mic into a camera that supplies phantom power and you're good to go.

Doesn't the DVX provide for phantom power at the XLR jacks?

I have an Oktava hypercardioid with an XLR cable.

I have an Artcessories Phantom II. Don't know how to use it though. I see 4 imputs and didn't know if I need to plug the mic into those to get power.

I thought I was just supposed to plug the mic into the camera and turn on the phantom for wireless power.

I don't think you need that device to power your mic. The description I found for the DVX says:

"2-channel XLR audio inputs with phantom power supply (+48V) and manual audio levels"

So I think your camera provides all the juice you could need. I don't have a DVX but the same principles apply to most devices. The device you referenced looks like a supplemental power supply, for use when your device does not have the phantom power capabilities.

Do you have the instruction manuals for the device and the camera? They'll be helpful.

Have you tried plugging the mic into the camera, select phantom power on the camera's XLR inputs and running a test?

I see lot's of buttons about input 1 but dont' understand what is the phantom power button. I'll have to read over the manual for the 19th time and see if I can understand it this time.

On the DVX100B, the switch is labeled "MIC POWER +48V," and there's one for both Input 1 and Input 2. It's on page 44 of the manual. (I would imagine the labeling is the same for the original and the "A," but I only looked at the one manual; and of course the pages are likely to be different in manuals for the other versions. :) )

Yeah, I just fooled around with it and found it. Awesome, I got a Phantom when I didn't need it. It's okay though, it came with the mic on a good deal I got. Thanks guys, I was able to get good sound on my first short.

Can I do this? Octava HyperCardoid with short XLR Cable..I have a Sennheiser G2 wireless and an XLR to Wireless transmitter adapter..The Octava runs with Phantom power only. Can I buy a Phantom power box say run on batteries, and then use the Octava in a wireless mode without plugging into my Can A-1? That would be helpful.

Would this create any interference using the wireless and the Phantom power box? Can anyone recommend a basic Phantom power box that just needs one XLR input or two? Any that run on AC and battery? Sort of new to Phantom power boxes.

Joker, you don't need a phantom power box either. The XH-A1 has +48V switches for each channel as well, they're around the corner from the XLR inputs, towards the lens. (At least according to the manual. :) )

(On a side note, and not to start a brand war, but the more I look at the XH-A1, the more it looks like Canon took their cues on the audio side of this camera from the DVX. The A1's audio looks amazingly better than the old XL1s... :) )

HI Captain;
Thanks. I realize the A1 provides phantom power but I want to use a microphone that is phantom only with my WIRELESS setup so I have no audio cords going into the Canon outside of the wireless receiver. In that case I think I will need some sort of phantom power box. At least I think so.

Whixh GS wireless? The SKP100 plugon and wireless bodypack transmitters do not provide phantom but the SKP500 plugon transmitter does. If you have one of the 100 series, you use the phantom supply between the mic and the transmitter.
