hello.

i just did a long shoot last weekend, i shot 20+ hours of video between friday afternoon and sunday AM

i have 5 of the dvx-user batteries, the 3+ hour version that was right before the current 4 hour version

i went through all 5 in one day

how much does the phantom power impact the battery life?

i have a senn me-66 and i was using the phantom power for that xlr port.

Re: phantom power for me66 and battery life?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that it's generally not advisable to send phantom power to battery powered (electret condenser) mics. However, some such mics can utilize a dummy battery if you wish to feed them phantom power.

Were you using the LCD and power zoom all the time?

Re: phantom power for me66 and battery life?

when i was using the phantom power i had no battery in the mic and the on/off switch was off.

the lcd was open about half the time and the zoom wasn't used much at all.

a lot of it was on a tripod but i didn't dare plug it into the wall power as there were too many people to come by the riser i was on and possibly trip on the cable.

Interesting. I have an ME80 that will work with Phantom power and no battery but the switch must be on. Also have a cheapo stick mic that will only work with battery.

Had you cycled the batteries (full charge to empty) a couple of times before use? Jared says it takes some use before the batteries achieve their full potential.

Re: phantom power for me66 and battery life?

The ME66 and fellow ME64s, 67s etc allow the option for the K6 power module which includes a battery or phantom power to power the mic. The ME series of mics will allow you to switch between battery and phantom, which does not affect the mic at all. You can order the mic to only be able to take phantom power, making the mic about 2 inces shorter. But, who cares about that. As far as the battery drain goes. I've shot all day on the 5400 battery with lcd closed and an ME67. So, I think the lcd is your main problem there. I wouldn't worry about the effect of the mic on your battery life. But i could be wrong.

Re: phantom power for me66 and battery life?

ok thanks.

i have the combo, the me66 with the power and it came with the rycote windscreen and the handgrip.

i was just shocked when i realized i was on my 4th battery and i only had one more!

i think i'll buy a couple of the new 4 hour ones...

i doubt i'll do many more shoots where i am doing that much filming in a day but never say never.
