Pet Peeve DuJour: The Over-Morphed Face for "horror effect".

In The Ring I was a little freaked out by the er, freaked out girl in the closet... who's face was frozen with a contorted, open-wide mouth... and I'm guessing this little mouth gag (pun intended) must have caught the eye of some other filmmakers.

So in the last mummy flick the mummy/zombies scream to invoke "fear"(?) with these mouths that open comically too far... and with the new Dennis Quaid thing the grandma and the ice-cream truck demons do the same thing.

I wish films of all genres... that employ CG... would stay in the realm of logical limits for biology (within the apparent physical circumstances presented)... like in the first spiderman he folds completely in half backwards as he's web-slinging along the buildings... why? Why push it all to the VISUAL max? Why not have the screaming mummy mouths open an apparent 6 FEET instead of only 1 foot?

Does the CG team have ex-dentists on staff?

"No... wider... wider..."

And I thought it was only me who was annoyed with that effect. I see it now and instantly think: someone has been having too much fun with After Effects...

The face in THE RING freaked you out a bit because it was made by Rick Baker, not some CGI hack. :)
He's amazingly talented.

That scene of the girls face in the closet freaked me out a bit as well. Came out of nowhere and was quite disturbing.

The CGI long open mouths like what we see in The Mummy are a little laughable.

Matt:

I think a lot of this all started here

I guess the stretchy mouth is the modern day "CGI cold breath when there's a ghost in the room"...

It's been getting on my nerves for a while. Didn't they use that in I Am Legend also?

Something else I've been seeing way too much of lately:

Person on Ground Facing Camera Gets Suddenly Snatched Backwards Into Darkness at High Speed by Unseen Force While Clawing at Ground.

I saw it in at least 3 major studio horror trailers last year...

I know what you mean. Every time I see something like this, I can't help it...I just scream............

My biggest pet peeve in film is taking us out the reality of our world, or even the created world.

My biggest pet peeve in film is taking us out the reality of our world, or even the created world.

I think we're saying the same thing J.R... pretty sure anyway... anything that bails on the created reality strictly for effect bugs the sh*t out of me. It feels like the filmmakers are talking down to us (the audience)... why not just have a nice pair of boobs pop into the corner frame like a signer for the hearing impaired? It's like "damn... this scene is getting pretty week... bring out the boobs."

I think the ridiculousness of the effects is usually in direct proportion to the ridiculousness of the script.

Now when I say a film was so bad my jaw hit the floor you'll have a proper image. I think those creatures are most likely yawning out of boredom from a lack of creativity on the filmmakers.

I think the next fest should be CHEESE-FEST... it would be a really good time to poke fun at all the stupid gimmicks and cliches used in the world of film... just have explosions for no reason... tear jerking moments for no reason... a basket of puppies for no reason... breast shots for no reason (meaning a crappy script who's purpose serves little more then to get those puppies out).

I think Matt (and you and I have worked together more than once)

Like every profession or job, there is just all sorts and some asshat running the show

Film is no different

You have some monkey either calling (or not making the call) on these things and they have no business being there.

In the case of LEGION

You have a director whose background is in VisFX and Producers who did Starship Troopers Part 3 ....

Just because you can does'nt mean you should.

Lol

Like the line from Jurrasic

I'll tell you the problem with the scientific power that you're using here: it didn't require any discipline to attain it. You read what others had done and you took the next step. You didn't earn the knowledge for yourselves, so you don't take any responsibility... for it. You stood on the shoulders of geniuses to accomplish something as fast as you could and before you even knew what you had you patented it and packaged it and slapped it on a plastic lunchbox, and now

Nothin' to talk about. Federer came, he saw, he kicked ***. Get used to it, because he's gonna win the calendar Slam this year.

Wow... he does look like the ice-cream man.

That pic makes him look a bit chicklety...

Hey if that guy is anywhere near as entertaining as Mcenroe then I'll have a revived interest in professional tennis.

Mcenroe always reminded me of Billy Crystal doing a character...

That's not a real person... nobody has smoke for hair.

It would be funny if that was a clip from the little known flick, "the rudest monster"... who goes around getting drunk and starting bar fights by belching in people's faces.

(*Alternate caption: Lemme' clean this crap off your glasses... you gotta' a tissue?)

No, nowhere near... Roddick is getting a little mouthy, and Serena had a rant that would have made McEnroe blush, but nobody is as consistently entertaining as McEnroe.
