GH2 Perhaps the first full feature movie on the hacked gh2... incredible trailer

How is this a violation? I watched it on a big screen (bigger than most) after hours, all by my lonesome. Other than the size of the screen, it was not much different than someone watching it on their computer screen. I sense a hint of sarcasm in your comment so I'll just end with this
I think is just kidding...I hope so :)

The quality really is almost the equal of the big expensive pro films I see all the time. No one can rightfully accuse the GH2 of not being a capable digital cinema camera for feature filmmaking - it is very capable (in the right hands of course). Vesubio deserves a hand for revealing yet another level of this camera's potential.

... it's no where near equal at those qualities- let's not delude ourselves! I watch movies in the cinema all the time, and 1080p blurays quite close. I can comfortably say that the GH2, with all its nice detail and colour/chroma feel is about on equal with a good movie DVD or TV. But not "almost the equal of the big expensive pro films" naaaaaaaaw - there's a strong cadence, a depth to the colours and grain, or cleanness/clarity that the GH2 still doesn't match compared to the big digital cameras or film. There's a reason why one man band filmmaker's like Rodriguez or Lars Von Trier aint using a GH2.

That said, it's really commendable what these guys are doing on a small budget but- all the best. Hope the film is great and the trailer and marketing/distribution does it justice.

you've put on a logical argument.
i believe what you say.
just to make sure-
did you download the trailer in full res? i hope you're not saying this after watching in Vimeo !
if you did watch THE FILE in full res, then you probably have a point.

... is about on equal with a good movie DVD

I don't agree that this is a logical argument. What the heck is a "good DVD movie" --it's usually a "big expensive pro film" converted to 8-bit, SD, low-bitrate mpeg2. Admittedly the GH2 is 8-bit, but it's higher bitrate with more efficient compression, and it certainly has visibly-better resolution than SD.

Yeah I downloaded the full res from the page. I mean, I can tell the difference between IMAX and 35 - although probably alot of people wont notice if it's shot on GH2 or Alexa or IMax lol. Vimeo compression aint so bad anyway. By good DVD movie, I mean putting in something like Quantum of Solace or No Country For Old Men or something. I might be crazy, but I personally prefer watching 480p Film than 720p GH2 [as that video is].

Heck, I've seen 2 hour Hollywood features that have been compressed to 1080p h264 codecs and the final file is 2GB in size [2 MB/s], and they still look "better" than 2 minute GH2 raw videos [at 100 MB/s]. Well that's bit exaggeration because there's banding and macroblocking [just go on Apple trailers etc] but you get my drift.

Output resolution and compression isn't exactly everything.

But I digress. It's just a tool for telling stories, sorry I didn't want to start an opinion war... I just didn't find it at all accurate to propagate the idea that it rivals the big films... this DOES, however look better than El Mariachi or Following or all those other break out indie films =]

well, of course i either won't say "it looks the same" as a good shot film film,
what i CAN say is maybe when using GH2 in some way i cannot tell at the moment, you COULD get even a better "pro film" look.
that GH2 trailer is nice, but i get what you mean. it hasn't got the exact film 'extra delicacy'.

Which to me means having an exceptionally gifted lighting person and a great colorist (apart from all the other obvious requirements).

might be true. but there will always be the 'analog vs digital' debate, the same as in still pics.
it will never be the same, ever.
what you mean,
is that with good lighting and coloring, alexa and GH2 could provide closer results (except for the f@#$%$g 8-bit and DR)

Let me quantify my post this way - the trailer looked about as good on the big screen as some films (ones shot on both film and digital) that are comparable in their look to the Musgo trailer. To my eyes, if I didn't know any better I would've thought it was shot on film or some kind of digital cinema camera. I probably wouldn't have assumed it was footage from a GH2, or any DSLR for that matter. And what I watched was recompressed from the Vimeo download, so I imagine the same trailer shown with fewer generations would look even better.

We just got a new 55" Samsung LED HDTV that can hook up to the internet. It can stream VIMEO and that trailer looked awesome.
I really want to see the whole film.

I wasn't really commenting on the trailer. I think it is a wonderful piece of film making. My reply was really more general in nature and in response to your "delicate" comment.

It's a great video indeed, and the 5D does shine withShane Hurlbut behind the camera. It's a fantastic short all around... but speaking from a pixel peeping perspective, the GH2 has long surpassed what this camera can do. I've been fooled into thinking I was looking at super 16 on more than a few gh2 clips. I've never formed that opinion with any Canon DSLR camera or or any other camera under 10k for that matter. That said, the 5D can still be very useful, and if you like photography... pshhh competition over.

Great work, very cinematic.

I have a question: I caught a glimpse of a camera stabilizer/fyer in your BTS video, and Iʻm looking for one myself. Which one did you use, and why?

Hi.

I have a GH2 and im ready to hack. I am abit lost. I'm trawling through the forums on personal view and i'm still unsure of what will work. This 42mb hack looks really good. Is it the GOP 12 hack? would a Class 6 Kingston standard card hold up to this hack? i know i need new cards, im just eager to get hacking! Any advice would be terrific. Cheers

Luckily for us, audiences don't pixel peep.
