Performance Gains with RAM?

how much performance gains will i be getting if i add 2GB more to my current 4GB, 3.4ghz Overclocked G6600 Setup? is it noticeable? i also have a 9500 GT CUDA enabled for Premiere Pro and after effects.

i guess you have a gain a little good performance, but you will note this performance in After Effects which use more RAM to work/render.

It might make a small difference. You'd be much better off with 8, though. (And even better off still with a modern CPU, an i7 model.)

2 aint nothing (cant hurt, but nothing noticeable) with 64bit processing. You need to jump up to at least a full 8Gigs of RAM for any computer with more then 4 processors. Basically the i5 and i7s run better with 8 or more Gigs of RAM.

Your talking about 2 different upgrades. The processor and the RAM. Both will make ANY computer run faster....
Frankly speaking, IF you get an new i7, then you would be best off having at least 8Gigs of RAM.
If your happy with your current computer, then 4 MORE gigs will help some. But 2 Gigs isn't going to do very much.
Basically, After Effects is the memory hog. You should have AT LEAST 1Gig of RAM for each processor in your computer for After Effects to use.
Any additional RAM will help in running other applications while After Effects is open... i.e. Premiere.
Most common programs will be fine with 4Gigs, but the Graphic Motion programs will benefit most, from available memory.

I should mention, I am not as familiar with PCs. I'm a Mac person... But these principles are BASIC to any computer.

i have 64bit Windows 7. So would it be better to just save money for i7? or 4GB more to make 8GB RAM?

4GB more RAM for now and save for whatever PC upgrade you want. The RAM ought to be under a hundred, and likely far below that. In fact, now that the second gen i7 chipset is out, the first gen stuff is cheaper than ever. I know because I built a 1st gen core i7 last year with 12 GB RAM. Upgraded to 24GB recently and was blown away by how much cheaper it (RAM) was now that the 2nd gen stuff was out.

I still use my Q6600 for the Internet and it is loaded with 8GB RAM (Maxxed out!) and an SSD. And it in no way comes close to my Workstation core i7.

As others have said: 1GB of RAM per core. Personally I always go 2GB of RAM per core. So an i7 machine (quad core, 8 threads) will max out at around 8GB RAM.

If you're under win 7, get the biggest amount of RAM your motherboard will handle. Then keep using the computer until speed is really a problem (it rarely is) and upgrade everything when the time comes. Don't forget that technology evolves so fast that there is no such thing as a single component upgrade anymore. If you want to upgrade tour processor, you also need to upgrade your motherboard and your RAM. So unless speed is a problem just push your current setup to its highest limit. It should get you through the winter until spring.

By the way, if you need to upgrade, be aware the 1366 I7 900 line is still the current high end line and will be replaced by a new high end line next year. The socket 1155 I7 2600, despite its higher speed, is the replacement for the mid range 1156 line. For editing I would always recomend sticking with the high end line. I believe 1366 I7 900 line is more stable for editing than the 1155/1156 line. That is my opinion after running tests. I chose the I7 960 over the I7 2600.
