Performance Concerns

Just got a camera HMC-150 and am trying it out for the first time.

Here is my system:

asus p6x58d-e
windows 7 64bit
24 gig ram
i7 950
GTX-470 latest drivers
antec 1000 watt power supply
5 1t Western Digital Black Caviar Drives

Scratch Disks:
Video: Drive G - RAID 0
Captured Audio: Drive D
Video Previews: Drive G - RAID 0
Audio Previews: Drive D

Test clip: 1080p 30frame and 720p 60

I put the clip on the timeline and it plays fine although on occasion there is a little skip.
If I put a 2 second dissolve between clips it really stutters and slows way down.

Any tips?

If you're using Premiere Pro CS5:

-Is MPE enabled?
-If you make changes to the AVCHD clips (for example, changing the length of the clip or splitting it) and then you try to cross-dissolve between them, it will stutter badly, to the point that you have to stop playback and re-start. I haven't found a fix for it and think it's a bug in PPro.

I usually transcode to AVC-Intra before editing.

Hi
Sure this is a well known issue with ppro cs4 as well as cs5. Adobe did admit this was an issue (search in ppro forum at adobe.com) and came up with an update that did not solve the problem. Since then I have tried to reopen this issue with no luck so far. The common workarounds are:
1. Transcode (wich in my oppinion makes no sence - transcoding takes time and files gets big and this was what we expected ro get rid of going from tape to file). But AVCHD seems to be so demanding that you need a 980xtreme to get descent playback when crossdissolving between two subclips from same clip.
2. Make a copy of all your files and use the copy to crossdissolve etc between clips from same file instead of editting and cutting in same file. Makes a bit more sence while it does not take as lonh time and the files do fill up twice as much space instead of maybe four or six times as much space.
I consider buying a Ninja and use Pro Res instead of AVCHD wich sucks when it comes to editting in ppro anyway.
