Anybody know how possible it is to reconcile the two? I was just gifted an 18mm 3.5 prime that could be useful. Im thinking some trimming may be in order to make the rear fit.

Yeah it's possible with most pentax lenses; the flange/backfocus distance is compatible and as long as your lens doesn't obstruct the mirror you should be good.
I actually have a pentax K to EOS adapter made in korea that I bought off ebay..not the best quality product but gets the job done. I wouldn't recommend it for still photography though unless you switch out your mirror to one with a focusing screen...manually focusing without it is too hard for 21MP unless you are using liveview and maginification.
