Penal Colony Music Vid Shot with DVX-100A in 24PA

I've got a first working cut of a music video I did for a track off of my new CD, "Unfinished Business", titled "Hypothalamus Now!", that will be part of a CD/DVD package I'm working on for the CD. Check it out at:

http://www.thepenalcolony.com/hypothalamusnowvideo.htm

I've got it up in QT HB/LB versions, realPlayer 10, and WMP9. My friend Dal Marsters shot it, I was the subject and did the editing in Avid Xpress Pro v4.1 and used AE6 for some of the effects, had some help in post from my friend Brian McNelis over at Blixa Films/Lakeshore Records.

The whole thing was shot in 24PA, standard pulldown, and we also did some shooting with a modified Fisher-Price PXL2000 toy camera, and used the DVX 100A for the analog conversion during capture.

I've been tracking the progress of the DVD on my site, so check out the other video bits at

If you are so inclined.

That's one hell of a cool video. I've got about a million "how'd you do that" questions, so instead of turning this into a How-To I'll just shower you with praise. I really liked the, for lack of a better term, shaky cam effect. I really liked the drum beat too. I had always heard that the DVX wasn't very good with greenscreen effects. But, on the QT-HB clip I could only really notice it when you were against the white background. Are you planning any other videos for this release or just this one?

Thank you very much for the kind words. The shaky cam stuff was a combination of different approaches and effects, and thank you again, because it would take some time to get into. Yeah, I've heard that about the DVX as well, I've also heard that attempts to do anything green screen with anything other than SD DV or HD will come out sucky. I've never tried it in anything else, so I had no context. I was happy with how it came out, but what do I know... :P Yeah, I did have some trouble with the edges here and there. I opted to just blow it out around the edges in the shots you are referring to, and just tried to pawn it off as stylization. I kinda like what the Avid did with it, and it's worked out okay so far, as you and I are the only people that seemed to have picked up on it.

I actually did do another video for the DVD before this one, shot it all in standard DV on cheapo consumer cameras and munged with it in post to strobe like 24fps film. I did a little teaser for it at

Thanks again,

I could see some green spilled on the actors clothes. Some images are overexposed as well Apart from that, it looks cool.

All the best

Fidel.

I checked out the other clip you mentioned and while I was there I checked out the whole site. Read some, listened some and watched some. I watched the HN video again and I gotta say I'm really diggin' what your doin', keep it up.

Yeah Fidel, another good catch. I tried to find matte green paint, but couldn't find any in the right color, had to settle for something that had a little gloss to it, and it ended up doing exactly what I feared it would do. Thanks for the props otherwise.

Thanks again to you too, Hwy26. Glad you liked the other stuff!!!
