OK, now you've got me confused again -- which is it? Upright (handle up) when you OPEN the case? In that instance, there's not enough room if you want adequate padding, at least not for my comfort level. Or do you mean upright when you're CARRYING the case? If that's what you mean, then yes, there's room.
I have mine on its side with the handstrap facing out. The buttons on the other side suffer no more damage then they would if it were oriented any other way.
