pcmcia cards on desktop

Anyone know of a device that allows you to connect a PCMCIA card like the p2 to your desktop so you can do an offload without the camera and without a laptop?

any ideas?

There are several, but the ones you want plug into the slot and give you a PCMCIA slot in the back of the computer. It's a cable-length limitation. I don't know of any USB2 or firewire ones that will work with a 32-bit card, so you have to use the ones that fit directly in a PCI slot, and those all put the PCMCIA port in the card slot section on the back of the computer.

Nope -- won't work. Those front-mounted ones are for 16-bit cards only. You need 32-bit. You'll see on the Amtron page that they specifically say it won't work for 32-bit cards, and they point you to two products for the 32-bit (which are both PCI rear-mount cards).

It looks like it was made mainly to support 3g network PCMCIA cards and if you take look at the data-rate supported it's a no go unfortunately.

DOH! Close but no cigar -- it's USB 1 only, and it specifically says it only supports modem cards, and *not* memory cards.

Rats.

 16-bit - what a step backwards these days, but then again if it's strictly a specifications limitation because of length...

We should give a prize to anyone who finds a good product that is front mounted
