PCMCIA adapter?

I would imagine there would be great hubub about it, if it were possible.
Exactly. And there is no hubbub because yes, we've all tried it, and no it doesn't work, nor will it ever work. The system just can't use a generic PCMCIA reader, it must be designed specifically to recognize P2.

:Drogar-Kriz(DBG): Maybe you can help me out this way:

I am trying to capture through whatever means onto a hard drive. Wheither that is through p2 cards or not.
I have these tools at my disposal:

Powerbook G4, several external firewire drives, 2 4gig p2 cards, FCP 4.5 (which will not recognise p2 cards).

I have a job this coming monday and need all this to come together....

FCP 4.5 only supports HDV, DVCProHD support didn't appear until V5.0.4.

Unless you upgrade your FCP, you will have to stick to DV (SD) shooting.

I have an old Ti Powerbook G4 500 and FCP is not installed.(until I can figure out how to install it on an old machine) I shoot on P2 cards and offload them to folders on an external FW drive connected to the G4. You can also copy them to the G4's drive if you have room.

When I get home I transfer all the copied P2 folders to my G5 editing system and import to FC 5.1.2.

This worked flawlessly for a big shoot we had a couple of weeks ago at an offroad race in the Nevada desert. I copied 6 to 8 8gig P2 cards each day out in the field while shooting. And it was literally "in the field"... My Kata backpack laying in the dirt with my Powerbook sitting on it copying files when I needed to...

My business partner was doing the same thing at a different spot with his $350 PC laptop.

This is our cheapest, most efficient workflow until the Cineporter comes out.

If your powerbook has PCMIA, and you have OSX 1.3.9 or better, than you can use your powerbook for copying your P2 to harddrives. Just download the P2 driver from Panasonic. Its free. You don't need FCP to Store P2. However, you need FCP5.04 or better to DIRECTLY IMPORT p2. I believe you can, however, import trough firewire like if it was a DV Camera, in FCP 4.5. FCP 4.5, or FCP HD like it was called, DOES SUPPORT DVCPRO HD. Simply turn of Thumbnails in vcr mode, and play the clip from the camera connected to the Mac. It should capture.

Also, make sure your camera settings are correct- no 720p25pn or 720p24pn direct capture.

Right, you could use 4.5 but you'll have to play the footage out from the camera and do a live capture over firewire. If that's what you need to do, you must NOT use 720pN mode.
