PCD20 ingest is slow

I have a Mac Pro with OSX and Vista SP1 x64 on it. Got the PCD20 and was ingesting a 64GB P2 chip under Vista and then OSX via Firewire 800. It was pretty slow, or maybe I am imagining it to be slow. Under Vista I was getting 12MB/sec or so. A full card took 1 hour and 30 mins. I tried under OSX, it was about the same. USB2.0 was about the same. If I tried 2 P2 cards at the same time, it slowed down one of them.

I thought FireWire 800 would remedy the situation, but it didn't.

I tried Leopard and Vista on my Macpro, (Bootcamp) I was Not impressed.
so I deleted the Vista partition...
Your issue of slow injest could be the particular drive your laying the files too, it may be slow, try to a fast raid set up.

I don't think it is the PCD20 that is slow. Something about the rest of the system is slow. You should be able to transfer pretty quickly. We have a Time Management whitepaper on our website, www.panasonic.com/p2hd That should tell you what you should be experiencing. And since you are not anywhere near the "experience" level you have something else going on here.

Best,

Jan

Well Tom, I have a RAID6 setup. Trust me, the target is not slow. I get 110MB/sec over the gigabit network. I've copied terabytes fo data without problems already.

It's an 8 Core 3.2Ghz Mac Pro with 10GB of RAM. Tried both under native OSX and Windows Vista as well. Both were slow.

Looking at the White Paper, it seems that it should've taken 52 minutes for a single 64GB card to offload. Now that's not bad, however, isn't FW800 almost twice as fast as USB 2.0?

Hi,

Something is in your way. We have a similar machine here and it is a fast process. Are you coming in on 1394 and out 1394? Try going on different busses, like in 1394 and out E-Sata to the Media Drive.

Hi Jan,

I was using the 1394b on the Mac Pro's front Panel. I thought it was a Windows issue, so tried OSX. Same speed. Tried USB2.0 under OSX and Windows, same speeds. The MOST I got was 20MB/sec out of FireWire800, and that was on a near empty P2 card.

I don't have an eSATA controller in my Mac Pro or else I'd try it. But I do have an internal SATA drive in there, and the speed is almost the same.

Hi Stormdave,
some questions,
Try using the rear connectors.
What OS are you using/what Qtime version.
is any other program running while your ingesting,
what ingest method , Log n Transfer/drag n drop/PanaSW etc, are you using.

FYI, My single Amtron reader in my Macpro ingests a full 32 gig card in 18mins to my Raid 0 internal work drives, (log n transfer) about the same to my sonnet esata connected external 2TB HDD's.

Cheers
