PC w/ Vista doesn't recognize my DV100A

A week ago, I installed Windows 7 on my PC, only to find out that my Panasonic DV100A wasn't compatible. I reinstalled Vista, but now when I connect the camera to the PC via firewire, I get no pop-up messages and can't import video with any of my editing programs (which are non-linear.) The Device Manager doesn't recognize the camera, either. I know my firewire ports and cables are working correctly because I can connect and use other devices properly with no problem. Are there Panasonic drivers I'm supposed to download or something like that before I can import video from the camera? Any help would be much appreciated.

What other firewire devices have you successfully connected to your PC? If they're working, then Vista is recognizing the firewire port on your PC. It wouldn't surprise me if you've blown the firewire port on your DVX100A itself. Try connecting the cam to some other computer and see if it is recognized.

I've tried two different video cameras (my Panasonic DV100A and a Canon GL2 that I borrowed to test) on two different PCs, both with Vista installed w/ the latest service packs. Neither camera worked on either computer. I was hoping it was simply a driver issue.

If my firewire port on the camera is blown, can I replace it or am I just screwed?

That still isn't definitive. You need to try your DVX on a non-Vista PC -- preferably one running XP.

Another option is to try to chain your DVX to another MiniDV cam via a firewire cable, and see if the two cams see each other.

If you've blown the firewire port on your DVX, it's not a huge deal. Cheapest (and best) fix is to buy an inexpensive MiniDV camcorder and use it for capturing your tapes. Shouldn't put the wear on the DVX anyway.
