Since I put up my Panasonic P2 site, I've been tracking which operating systems people are using. The results seem to explain why we have such a format war going on!

Mac users: 49.65%
Windows users: 49.69%

Linux and iPhone round everything off to 100%.

I thought this probably explains why the battles get so heated about which platform is better for the P2 workflow. It also means that anyone who supports or sells the cameras must support them under both platforms if they want to do well.

I use a cheap PC laptop as a dumping station (that also serves as another internet surfer), and I edit and do all my work on a Mac/FCP though. (G5 desktop)

Eventually i will get a MB Pro with dual system adapter, and won't need the PC laptop at all.

I have used Mac with FCP before and hate that you have to convert the .MXF to Quicktime. Its just a huge waste of time. So If I were to buy a Mac, I would also need to buy Avid to run on it. AVID=Native MXF

I also cant understand the pricing of Macintosh. For just over a thousand dollars I built a custom PC that will eat any $6000 Mac for breakfast. I think that they produce a great product, but I just dont understand their pricing. But with my savings on the computer itself, I was able to go and buy Avid Media Composer.

And there you have it, my two cents. :)

Don't know of any $6000 Macintoshes. Any MacPro I'd buy would be basic and then I outfit it with RAM, HDD etc using third party vendors.

A cheap PC, at least to me, is exactly that.

My four cents. (it would be two cents, but Mac are more expensive.)

Compare Apples to well, Dells.

A similarly configured Dell Quad Core is more expensive than a comparable MacPro quad.

True, building your own PC may be cheaper, and well, may be cheap.

Does it really matter what OS you choose at this point so long as it suits you needs/wants? I use OSX, XP, and Linux and for me it always comes down to what is the best tool for the job. Just as an example of how I use things in my workflow:

Mac - ProTools (Multi-track audio)
PCs - Edius (Video editing), Adobe CS3 (Video and stills editing), Quickbooks (bookkeeping), Office (general clerical apps)
Linux - Large file servers (2x 20TB), ftp site

Not sure this is helpful but my 2 cents for what it is worth

Bob I agree with you - There are so many threads on this forum about this crap. What's going to mix well for your workflow, might now work with someone else's. Apple does run Both and maybe Linux as well. Find what works best for you.

Currently only own some aging win boxes, but I worked on Mac Pros all last semester in the film lab and *nix boxes in the computer science lab. Using Raylight until I move to Mac when I have everything squared away.

I use both Mac and PC; I like to keep up to speed on both platforms.

Primary uses:
PC (3.8Ghz Overclocked C2D) = Adobe Production Premium CS3; editing, grading, special effects, dvd authoring
Mac G5= Logic Audio Pro 8; scoring and sound effects

Well ofcourse PC is ... just kidding, just kidding.

I think at this point, it's all the same, it's like trying on gloves, all gloves protect your hands (aka "GET's the job done), but till you find the glove with the most comfort for yourself.

I have no dislikes towards macs, sometimes even a bit tempted.

But my PC platform has been good to me, and to this point always gets the job done well.

Yeah, if you buy the base model. Which isnt that fast and only has 2gb of ram.

Thier laptops are expensive as well. I wish that they would lower their prices cause I was looking at buying a new laptop and all the new PC's are coming with Vista. I hate Vista!!

I am working out my P2 workflow issues as I just started shooting with an HVX off and on.

FCS-2 is nice, but I just think the interface is clumsy. I don't mind the MXF to QT wrapping, as I just get a drink or whatever but I hate cutting on FCP.

Raylight for Vegas is where I'm at now. Running it off a 1.6gh Centrino Duo with one gig of ram causes no problems at all and the import is seamless.

Both have their place.

My original point is not to buy Apple RAM, but third party RAM.

That goes for how much Dell charges as well.

Base model with minimal RAM.

Again, if you are spending $6K by buying a Mac from Apple with its drives and extra RAM, then you being a little bit ignorant.

Thats cool, but my point still stands. Give me and a Mac buyer the same amount of money and I will come back with a faster/more robust computer. :)

One of the main reasons a lot (including me) use Macs instead of PC's is the OS.
If PC's has OSX, then I'd probably look into PC's possibly.
Also, most people don't build their own computers. Compare a prebuilt PC to a Mac in build quality. There is no comparison.

I use Mac, my decision has nothing to do with P2, I was already using Mac before I got an HVX.

Since you can now run both Windows and Mac OS X on Intel Macs, I don't understand why anyone would buy a PC.

Interestingly, Windows w/Parallels runs much faster on my Macs than it does on an equivalent PC. Strange but true. MUCH faster.

That may be true, but the Hardware on a Mac is not optimized to run windows. I.e. run bootcamp on a mac, open premier pro, and try to render anything. It will take hours.
