pc to mac load?

Like you would any other file. Set up a network or copy the files to an external firewire/USB FAT32 drive and use that instead - might be faster than copying over a network (unless you're on a gigabit-network). Your question goes beyond the scope of this particular forum.

I you want to edit on both the PC and the Mac and not just transfer the video, you would also want to use a container format that is understood by your tools on both platforms.

That's where things get complicated, and in that case you may want to explain in detail what you have and what you are trying to do.

I own a COMPAQ LAPTOP computer with a pcmia slot. I want to unload the card into the laptop and then unload that information into my power mac g5 to edit with final cut pro 5. CAN THIS BE DONE? And how is this done. if someone is nice enough to explain it to me i would appreciate it. Would this be easier if i just bought a powerbook?

thanks

everything is easier if you just bought a mac! :)

i access our network (windows network) all the time at work. I backup and transfer at around 100mbps, not the fastest but a decent solution

It's easy. 2 choices
A.) You make a new folder in your PC call it P2_Folder_01 (or whatever)
Copy the P2 CONTENTS folder and the LASTCLIP.txt into your new folder.
Burn that folder to a DVD and then you can actually use that
in FCP. Just tell FCP to import P2 and point it to the DVD. A little slow but then you don't have to copy the entire CONTENTS folder to the MAC.

B.)You make a new folder on a FAT32 formatted external firewire/usb drive call it P2_Folder_01 (or whatever)
Copy the P2 CONTENTS folder and the LASTCLIP.txt into your new folder on your external drive. Import into FCP from your external drive.

e-mail me if you have any questions! Good Luck

Or you can turn on File Sharing on the Mac, and check the checkbox for Windows clients. Then share a folder on the network, granting users rights to modify files. You'll then be able to access the folder from the PC through the Network Neighborhood, and drag-and-drop files to the Mac. If would not recommend doing that with anything slower than a 100Mbps connection -- a Gigabit connection would be ideal.

Only the older G4 Powerbooks have the Cardbus (32-bit PCMCIA) slot, so if you already own a Compaq Laptop with a PCMCIA slot then I'd suggest you use that. You could use P2 Genie for Windows (http://www.p2genie.com/BuyWindows.aspx) to automate the offloading process for you if you don't want to be doing that yourself. You will propably have to use an external drive for your footage anyway so setting up P2 Genie to copy to that drive and then hooking it into your Mac would be the fastest way by far.

I am using an HP laptop and a G5 Mac. I need to get to the PC for effects work and to the Mac for editing. My workflow is like this. I've taken a 100GB portable USB drive and divided it into 21 4GB+ drives. During the shoot an assistant copies the P2 cards over to the "virtual P2" drives. We use the P2 Viewer application to modify the metadata, storing take information, etc. Then we burn a backup DVD-R for each P2 using Sonic Data Disk which came with the laptop. Both the logical disks and the DVDs can be read as "virtual P2" cards by both the Mac (Final Cut HD) and the PC (Premiere Pro 2.0 with DVFilm Raylight). This workflow handles archive/backup as well as getting all of the footage to both platforms in the most portable and most original format -- the .mxf files. This workflow keeps everything in FAT32 format, minimizing format translation copy issues. And it respects the 1-disk = 1-P2-card concept. P2 Viewer, for example, doesn't know about directory structures so it can't read a folder as a "virtual P2" card. When the files are ingested on the MAC side, they are copied as Quicktime to a big disk by FCP. On the PC side, the virtual P2 card is copied into a folder in a directory structure on a big disk and then Raylight is applied to it.

Sounds a bit cumbersome to me. Why would you bother dividing a drive into 21 partitions and have to copy stuff over manually when the P2 Genie will automate that process and the P2 Viewer has no problems reading a directory as a virtual card?

My copy of P2 Viewer will *not* read a directory as a virtual card. Is there an update available?

Have you created a virtual card for that directory (Tools -> Setting Virtual P2 Cards, click on leftmost toolbar button), and does the directory contain a CONTENTS folder and LASTCLIP.TXT file?

Yes! <emphatically>

I ran a dozen tests copying the card contents to a folder with as simple a path as "c:\a\" and it failed to recognize the virtual card. Only when the files were in a root directory of a device -- same files -- either a partition or a DVD did the P2 viewer recognize the virtual card. Then it works perfectly.

I haven't seen an error before where a program functioned perfectly except for not recognizing paths. Every program I've seen exhibit this behavior was operating on a whole device, and merely used the pathing algorithms to navigate between devices, but for expediency (and compatibility) allowed navigation of the path and then truncated and did not use anything past the first term in the path string. So I have seen this behavior used by design in programs before. And the P2 Viewer documentation and "help" menu items do not contradict this behavior.

I assumed that since the HVX works with partitions when hosting a firewire disk, and not with a directory structure, that the P2 viewer was just copying the camera behavior.

Is it possible that either my copy of the P2 viewer application or the P2 driver is corrupted? I installed the program on two computers from the same CD that came with the camera and saw the same behavior. And I uninstalled and reinstalled it.

So if people are experiencing that P2 viewer recognizes a folder as a "virtual P2", then all I can conclude is that the copy on my CD is corrupted or is somehow a test version, and that I need to download and install a fresh copy from somewhere.

Andy,

My suggestion is to uninstall your P2 viewer and then reinstall. You can download the latest version from the HVX200 page under Resources.

I have had my own copy get corrupted and it too just got replaced. Try a fresh install, doesn't take that long and you are back in business.

Best,

jan

Yes! I downloaded P2 Viewer and reinstalled. It is now recognizing directories as "virtual P2" cards. I'll re-think my workflow. Thanks!!!
