i know, i know. why do i own a PC and not a Mac? a girl was involved with the purchase of our computer. she doesn't need to do any editing.

my question is: What edit software is available for the EX-1 that can work with Windows XP(2 i think)?

thanks in advance for any help you may offer.

new to the game,

Edius?

Never tried it but everyone raves. Also Sony Vegas.

I believe both can be downloaded for a free trial.

Since last week, THE choice is Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.2.0. The XDCam update works like a dream! I'm trying things now that would bring the system to a crawl before--like color grading--still playing back in realtime. It's a dream come true: EX1 + Premiere Pro CS3.

There's nothing wrong with owning a PC over a Mac, the whole Mac thing is all hype as far as I'm concerned. I use a Mac at school and a PC at home, and personally, I don't have a problem with either.

I know there are tons of people on here that will complain about PC's being no good for any editing and whatnot, and probably just as many arguing the opposite, I don't want to start a flame war or anything. But either system is just as good as the other as far as I'm concerned.

It's all up to personal preference. There is no real logic behind any of it. Anyone that says you can edit better on a Mac compared to a PC or the other way around has no sense. If you have a good, solid system on either platform it shouldn't really matter what system you are running, as long as you have a decent NLE and some skills.

The only reason I'm posting this is because I just can't stand how there are so many people out there that think you need a Mac to edit on when there are a lot of people that get by just fine spending half the cash and working on a PC. I've never owned a Mac personally and have had no problems editing video/audio or doing graphic/web design or anything else for that matter on a PC. Just as I've never had a problem doing any of that on a Mac at school...

And to set the record straight, my school was split 50/50 into Mac's and PC's, it just so happened that the classes I was in happened to be in the Mac labs, in case someone wanted to come in with the "Why didn't your school use PC's then?" remark.

Just my 2 cents. :)

But in response to your post... I personally use Adobe Premiere CS3, and I love it. I've used Avid, and personally thought it seemed to be trying to hard to be flashy and ended up being harder to do basic things that would be simple to do in Premiere, I'm sure there are people here that will disagree, but it's entirely up to personal preference. Any of the higher end NLE's will all basically do the same thing, it's up to the workflow and interface you prefer.

thanks to all of you.

thanks to all of you.

i'm glad to hear that Premiere works. i already have that on my computer.

thanks for saving me $600(Vegas Pro).

i owe you guys.

Asking anyone about video editing platforms or software is a bit like criticising their wife. It just leads to "religious" wars and you'll find it hard to get common concensus. We're all zealots.

I currently have a seriously under-powered laptop (modern processor and 4GB memory but short on disk space and external FAT drive doesn't really cut it) and am using Sony Vegas Pro. It's Pro Titler is somewhat crude and buggy and what I'd call "beta" level and I'm having endless problems with rendering which may be down to lack of CPU power, the fact I'm running under Vista or that rather dodgy external drive. I should add that other users are having no such problems and are advising me to reinstall the software.

Those rendering issues aside, I love using Vegas Pro and loathe Adobe Premiere (as for Avid - my brother who works at Goldsmiths swears by it, I swear at it!) Quite aside from Adobe's continual upgrade price gouging issues and difficulties in applying upgrades you've paid a fortune for it just seems like it's been patched and patched and patched and doesn't feel easy and intuitive the way Vegas Pro does with its "start from scratch ground up redesign" feel. Every time Adobe update a product part of me dies, knowing I'm going to be spending hours on the phone convincing Adobe I'm a legitimate customer and the upgrade should just recognise that.

Sony Vegas' big weakness is 3rd party plug-ins - too often it's left off the "to do" list for 3rd parties. It's big strength is the help and support you get on forums from the minority who've seen the light and love the software. The same is certainly true of Final Cut Pro and possibly the other NLEs too.

I'm now saving for a Mac Workstation with Final Cut Pro. Not that I like Macs or can pretend I'm looking forward to the switch - Apples are luvvie designer nonsense that are mostly style over substance as far as I'm concerned, but when you get stuck you at least know there's a ton of people out there with PMW-EX1s who may be able to help you out.
