PC Commercials Edited on Macs?

Just saw this on Adult Swim last night. Allegedly, the new "I'm a PC" commercials are edited on Macs. If true, what a hoot.

I worked at an ad agency that did a lot of Microsoft print and web campaigns and all of their PC targeted stuff was made on Macs.

So I wouldn't be surprised.

What difference would it make either way...it's advertising. Do you REALLY think the system a commercial is edited on (PC or Mac based) makes a difference? I was VP of Marketing & Sales for an ad agency in another life and we used equal parts PC and Mac...back in the day, Mac did some stuff that a PC couldn't and vise-versa. Now, it really doesn't matter.

I really get a kick out of how personal Mac-aholics take this stuff. It's just a computer platform....get over it. LOL!

...by the way, I use both PC & Mac systems everyday.

I am guessing that the point of the original post was irony, not necessarily a "Mac-aholic" taking something too seriously.

Microsoft doesn't have anything against apple, they make a ton of software that works on macs too, its a decent sized market for them.

come on guys, its the irony of the message in the commercial. and for the record, I own four PCs and one Mac, each a tool for a different purpose.

How does that even matter? The commercials don't bash Macs, they just say PC is not the stereotype that the Apple commercials make them out to be. That doesn't mean or imply at all that Mac's are crap or shouldn't be used to edit film/video. It doesn't even mean that MS employees shouldn't all own a Mac.

All the commercials are saying, is PC is not some stodgy stereotypical dude in a suit and that they are used all over the world by all kinds of people for all sorts of things.

It's not really ironic. It would be ironic if the commercials purported that Macs are lame or incapabale, or that the PC supported or was capable of superior video and graphic editing. Neither are true... so there's really no irony in the message.

For the record, I own 2 macs and 2 PCs.

Reality is always filled with this fun little contradictions. I remember when someone leaked Britney Spears Tour rider a few years ago after her million dollar Pepsi endorsement, the only soft drink requested for her dressing room was Coke.

I have to say that the new "I'm a PC" ads are perhaps the strongest ads Microsoft has ever put together. Thank God they dropped those freakin weird Seinfeld ads.

I think that using one product to create an ad for the competitor is the definition of ironic.

...but Microsoft doesn't make PC's. (just software for both platforms)

Flip-side, I also heard that the Mac commercial scripts were developed using Microsoft Word!

I could care less about platforms. I use them both. But this is like a Panasonic commercial shot with a Sony. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with it and that kind of stuff happens all the time. I just find it ironic.

Right now, I'm drinking a Guinness out of a Coors glass....

i feel like a panasonic commecial would be shot on Film......

that being said, Im a PC guy myself, noone i know has a mac, except a couple editors... and JDS. Its just because my dad is the Director of MIS at a hospital, and so he designs computer systems on a PC. HEnce, we always had PCs in the house.... Though i Edit i make all my artwork on Vegas.... on PC, so the stereo types are non sense...

Well somethings are just ironic and when it comes to PC and Mac, it can be funny. One of my friends works as a flash designer for a leading add company in seattle and they create good looking adds for MS on the mac and MS then pays them to recreate the same look and feel in one of their programs to advertise what can be done with their program. It takes them about 3 to 4 times as long to make the MS software do the same thing but they get paid well for their time.

Also a friend of mine is the lead maintenance engineer at a high-rize in Bellevue. MS rents 4 flours there and he was surprised to learn they use all Intel Imacs running vista for there work. One of the techs told him its much easier to move people around because their all wireless. My friend thought it was quite ironic because there's hundreds of imacs running just vista.

Who cares what machine you use as long as you can make money and you enjoy using it. I own and use both but edit in FCP.

I definitely agree. The Mac commercials were trying to insult PCs, and they just ran with it and made it into a good thing.

Really? I find the "I'm a PC" ad to be exceedingly derivative. It's a freakin' montage spot with clunky transitions that are supposed to be cute, but are instead grating. And the fact that it was produced by one of my favorite ad agencies – Crispin, Porter + Bogusky – just makes it all the more disappointing.

I mean, it might be a decent Microsoft compared to what they've done in the past, but as an ad in general, I think it's weak.

I thought it was effective and smart. If it's weak, what would you do that's better?

My original thought was Seinfeld stand-up "did you ever notice" type stuff with PCs VS Macs and bashing Apple for all sorts of things in a funny way, about needing special USB cables, paying way more, limited this and that, etc.

But it occured to me that there's good reason MS didn't do this.

So what's your idea?

Ummm, I haven't taken the time to sit around concepting ideas for a Microsoft campaign gratis. But considering that creating advertising is what I do for a living, I would hope I could come up with something better. But before even getting to creative ideas, I'd have to start with the strategy. Because what they're using now feels exactly like the response to Apple that it is. Which is generally not the best idea when you're already the top dog.

For more ranting, here's my blog entry on the subject: http://www.adhole.com/?p=257
