I haven't purchased anything from an individual throught paypal before, so I've got a few questions. The person I'm buying from sent me a money request.

After I send the money, does he get it immediately? Or do I wait until the product is received to approve the transaction? Thanks for the help.

He/she gets the money immediately.

You are taking a bit of a risk, so you have to be able to trust the other person. If it was the other way around, and you would get to receive the item before approving payment, then he/she would be taking the risk, (you could keep the item and refuse payment) so someone always has to assume some risk, unless you use an escrow service.

An escrow is a third party who collects the payment from you and the item from the seller and makes the exchange. They hold your money while you inspect the item, then they send the money on if you okay it, or if you don't send the item back in the same condition it was received in a designated amount of time. There is, of course, additional cost associated with the service.

Paypal has some built in re-course that you can take to get your money back if you get screwed, but it is limited and takes time. They will only guarantee a certain amount and there are certain stipulations associated with that service.

escrow.com is a reputable service. They are the official escrow service recommended by ebay. You can go the their web-site to see their fees.
