Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

I made this extension hood by placing a large card at the distance from the lens where I wanted the hood to end. (at the end of the Steadycam JR)  Then zoomed all the way out and traced the edges onto the card where they were just out of frame (plus a little safe area).  This gave me the outside dimension.  The inside dimension is, of course the hood (plus the thickness of velcro around it.  The hood is made of illustrator board and grey tape and painted with wrinkle black from an auto parts store.  It looks pretty good and works great.  The thickness of the board comes just flush with the filter... I was planning to add a velcro strip to hold the filter in at the top but it isn't necessary.  The filter is much closer to the lens than the matteboxes put it (it just clears the mic).

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Nice ingenuity - it looks great. So how does it attach to the lens hood? Do you mean that there is velcro on the edge of the hood that this somehow wraps around? (And if so, how does the 'custom hood' latch back onto itself at the seam.) Or does it just slip over the hood snugly?

Thanks - Clayton

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

There is a strip of "soft fuzzy" velcro around the stock lens hood and "hook" velcro on the inside edges of the hood extension. I put pieces of paper in between the hood and the extension while I slide it on and allign the two (by looking into the viewfinder and running my finger just inside the edge 'till its just out of frame on all sides) then carefully slide the paper out and press the velcro into good contact. It holds well as the hood is light. (It's even light enough to use on the Steadycam, however, I was using it on the steadycam last friday for a fly into a building shot and it was a bit windy that day and it did push on the front end more.
Check out the other pics of the lens hood conversion to filter holder here or on its thread.

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Would consider making a lens hood filter holder for me?

I will send you the Camera's hood and any other material you need.

I can pay you for your time, but please bare in mind that I am trying to make my first independent digital feature film on a very tiny budget so I would appreciate you doing this work for me at your lowest price but fair price.

To contact me directly to discuss this further, please write to me at ron@rjsentertainment.com

Thanks,

Ron Stone

Multimedia,
Great work on the lens hood/filter holder! Can you share any information on using the Panasonic DVX100 with the Steadicam JR? Does the camera work well with the JR even though it is a little over the maximum weight guideline of 4lbs?

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Yes... see my reply to the JR post question.. in short... it works GREAT!

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Beautiful conversion. Love it. Great work. :)

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Multi-Media,

any chance you can update the links to your photos of the lens hood?

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Sure... Now How do I do that again?? ::)

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Seriously... I forgot how to post images in the Forums :-[

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Thanks So Much for the Link!

I just put the three images for you DIY nuts out there. I can only assume that the links will appear "magically" with the article.

Thanks to Jarred for hosting... I think he gets the "Community Spirit Award" for taking all the time and trouble to provide us with this forum.

Look for future posts of real images from the camera... I'm working on a really nice project now and would like to share when I get some time clear.

At the moment, I'm still struggling with the editing and I need to learn Boris to do some title effects and learn how to make my DVD burner work (all for a real job with a real deadline) but I've been known for doing this to myself for years now.

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Hi Dale,

I look forward to seeing your pix, but I think you may need to link directly to the resulting html pages after you upload them. Jarred, is there any way to track them down and place some links after the fact?

Thanks - Clayton

Re: Part II Lens Hood Filter Holder Plus Hood Ext

Either that MM or send me the files and I can host them off my site.
