:( I just wanted to quickly post that, despite the offer of help, Michael Pappas told me he has decided he's had enough of JVC's SSE issue and doesn't want to take unnecessary chances. He's decided to go with the Canon instead. I for one am sorry to see him go and hope he continues to visit the JVC Board. His posts were/are always respectful as when he was appreciative as heck relative to my offer of flying a camera down to him so he could get on with business and I think, through his websites, that, though he is young, he's dedicated to his craft. And I don't mean "though he's young" as a derogatory remark. That youth is exactly what balances out this industry. I mean that we can ill-afford to lose someone who brings so much so soon to this craft.

JVC is working on fixing the issue through new technology as it comes up but the 100HD is what it is and will be for the foreseeable future. Thank heaven we have 6 now that do not easily exhibit these flaws but the bottom line is that as soon as JVC fixes this last issue AND gets a good power partner, the faster they'll stop losing customers who have already bought but returned and jumped ship for a valid reason. Michael is the kind of guy I expect to see companies like JVC really courting in a few years because he's advanced enough to have his own successful production company and ordering cameras half dozen or a dozen at a crack.

Cheers to you, Michael. The HD Canon is a good camera that performed 1000% better than it's detractors (who hadn't even touched the camera before commenting in many cases) said it would be but remember, it's the vision of the artist and not the vision through the viewfinder that counts. Please keep visiting the JVC Board with your insight and humor. I think we all appreciate it and will miss your contributions.

Wow,
I'm actually surprised to hear that, especially after seeing how well the HD100 performs.

Also, I was surprised from this thread:
http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=61150

It shows a lot of noise in the H1 image even lit in broad daylight.

Let's face it, all of the 1/3" camera have their drawbacks.

The HD100 has had some issues, but they are fixable.

Low picture quality is not. Trying to clean up noise in post only softens the image.
The HD100 produces an awesome image.
I'm surprised how clean it is and holds detail very well.

I had considered the H1, but was disapointed in some of the footage I've seen.
It has a super sharp image, but is to noisy for me.

Also, I want a camera that is able to produce real 24p filmic images. The HD100 fits that bill.

yeah, i'm driving so forgive the all lowercase, i know but he e-mailed me yesterday. i offered to sell him one of our brand new ones we know works with 0 time and the idx system telling him we'd just order another from evs but even then he saidhe was headed to canon. i agree w/ you; the canon's a good cam but far bekow imo the pic quality of the jvc. oh well. tried. i think he's a good guy but has to make, imo, his own mistakes. it's too bad for jvc. one small story like this can really hurt. he knows alot of people but jvc is doing the best they can and can't control everything. we can't wait until the new 2/3 chips debut at nab. if they're all that they appear to be and the 7000 is a reality by nab, we're walkin' 2 home w/ us.

Thats sad to hear about Michael, I just got our HD100 last week and Ive been testing it in different light conditions and NO split screen.

My camera was shipped from Japan according to my dealer. I guess this unit is already part of a recent batch and the issue was fixed.

If you jumped from every camera that had one an issue with it then I'm not sure where you would ever get to.

I was reasonably confident that JVC would have calibrated the camera to their satisfaction but the H1 is a strong camera as well. I think it was more than just Michael's decision.

No matter what, good luck...

Hey guys,

Fwiw, Michael has nothing but high praise for the JVC. I'm down in O.C. visiting as we went to a friends' film screening for the industry last night. (HDCAM 24p edited in FCP DVCPRO HD 108024p, dumped back to HDCAM 24p and projected 1080p. It looked phenomenal)

He's busy fiddling and caressing his H1, as the FedEx guy showed up at his house this morning with a 16x manual lens that he can't stop kissing. But...he says he actually liked the Fujinon better (tactile feel of the focus), and he did kiss his HD100 too.;-)

It really is too bad because he says that if it were'nt for the SSE he would've stuck with it.

What sold him on the JVC:

--true progressive 24p
--true square pixel raster. No pixel shift tricks
--pro design and build quality
--Fujinon lens
--highlight handling
--industry standard bayonet mount
--focus assist
--amazing price!

What didn't sell:

--SSE and the uncertainty of it
--Conflicting info and statetments from 4 different JVC people

He still thinks it's the best under $10K camera, when considering all the professional aspects of the camera. He's a resolution freak at heart, which is where the H1 excels, but he was willing to compromise a tiny bit in that area for the look and feel of the JVC.

That SSE was a no go...nevertheless, once that's fixed, I'm sure it'll probably be in the toolkit at some point. We both agree that the JVC and Canon are the true class of the "affordable" category. Different image characteristics and qualities, but both great and very rich.

had considered the H1, but was disapointed in some of the footage I've seen. It has a super sharp image, but is to noisy for me.

Also, I want a camera that is able to produce real 24p filmic images. The HD100 fits that bill.

Stevet, have you only watched m2t's from the H1? You might be seeing the pulldown burps in the MPEG 2 stream when watching it on a computer, particularly through VLC player. You need to see either 24p extractions from 24F or watch it on a 1080i set. And the noise issue? Scott Billups and the twenty other people that were at the FotoKem transfer film-out of the H1 SDI to Wafian test, vs. F900 HDCAM film-out--everyone agreed the H1 was actually cleaner but nobody can explain why.

We shot some stuff in downtown L.A. last night and it looks very filmic and clean--even at higher db and no NR settings fiddled with.

I'm sorry, this too noisy thing with the H1 just isn't true in comparison to the other cameras.

We're going to shoot a little with the "non hd" manual lens today and hopefully upload a few clips.

Best,

Elton

Don't get me wrong Elton, I think the H1 is a great camera.

The posts you've made have proved that.

I just don't understand what I'm seeing in the post I made reference to above.

That example is bad for the H1, but on the otherhand, there is no reference to settings, such as gain?

The Hd100 is cleaner than I thought it would be. Joel (Joelnet here) and I went out today with his HVX200 and my HD100. We like them both and pointed out both camera's qualities.

The HVX is one heck of a decent package. At some point we plan on getting hold of a DSC chart and matching them as close as possible and try some intercutting. There's been talk that the HVX is not as sharp as the HD100. OK, so the HD100 is a bit sharper, but after looking at the HVX today, it produces one decent HD image! It looks dang good to me. I love the quick scene control the HVX offers.
Joel was flying through the different scenes all while shooting.

Joel and I talked about the H1. We're not sure about the noisy example because we have heard nothing but praise for the H1.

I think what's coming to light here is that the HD100 is stepping up and surprising a lot of people how good it performs.

Let's face it, the H1, HD100, Z1, and HVX200 are all decent cameras and are capable of producing some real pro stuff.

Steve- DSC charts are expensive and we just bought a half dozen of them for the crew here now that we've moved to HD. One of them is going out to one of my guys, Mike Pellagatti, in Scottsdale. I'm sure he'll be happy to let you use it for a couple of days to calibrate your cameras but fair warning, you'll be hooked and you can't have ours!!! You'll simply have to get your own;-) Let me know if that works for you and I'l arrange it.
Jonathan

Jonathan,
Thank you for your offer. You are the best.
Well, I agree with you regarding having my own.

I am going to order one soon. It's a must have.

Thanks again.
Stop by if you're ever in the area man!

Steve

I tried PMing and e-mailing you but your profile doesn't allow it so...
I'm coming in next week for a pre-production meeting with the CMSA, two of the Board members of which live in Scottsdale. I'll be having dinner with Mike that evening and if you're free, we'd be happy to make it three. I usually come into Scottsdale Airport and leave the plane at AVNET's Jet Center if you know where that is. I'll let you know which day if you PM me your e-mail address.

I am going to the NAB to buy the 2006 model gyhd100u I wonder if it will be the same or will they make a few changes such as a better stalk lense and stalk battery?

If you're referring to my earlier post, vision quest, I meant that the JVC 7000 is supposed to be at NAB this year...not for $7000 (don't we all wish...a 2/3" quality cam from JVC for $7k!!!) I've heard conflicting stories on its appearance. Some say it's only a prototype which I lean towards believing but others say it'll become a reality this year. I'm like you; I don't know. But if they do actually produce them, we're first in line! Like it's little brother, the 100HD, the higher-end JVC just fits our production profile very well right now.

You have to figure JVC Canopus/Thomson/Grass Vally group......(Harris who? *Due to licensing restrictions, TitleMotion Pro is not included with this trial. Download Demo or order on CD-ROM (see below).(see Canopus site for this disclaimer)
are all over new things this year

Ya I was going to say what did I miss I should have known. Anyway I will be picking up a 100u or what ever the new model is at NAB hope it was worth the wait I almost didnt passing up the IDX battery deal, soon I will find out if I made a mistake or not especially with the 400 dallar price increase.

That's too bad and really doesn't make a lot of sense.
I've owned a studio full of Canons, all the XLs and have produced a ton with them.
But, after looking at a lot of XL-H1 output and comparing it to the HD100, I simply had to make the move.
Regarding the filmic look, the JVC takes it to another level. The true 24p block, latitude and color just produce a better image, and that's unanimous in our studios.
The SSE issue is certainly of concern, but we encountered it once in normal circumstances, immediately contacted JVC, got a response on the weekend and by monday morning both Ken Freed and Dwayne Kersey were on it, by email and phone including a follow-up call from Ken yesterday to check that it was being handled to our satisfaction.
It literally doesn't get any better than that as far as customer service, and it certainly seems as though the new implementation at JVC CA is meant to deal with the abberant SSE issues on some cameras.
The other head scratcher with me as far as jumpping the shark to the H1 is that along with perhaps the nicest image of any of the new HD cameras, you can have a pair of them for the cost of the H1.
I dig the XL series and will always have a fondness for all of the work we did with them, but after tweaking up the HD100 and working with it for a few weeks, the HD100 is in a whole other place IMO.

I couldn't agree more, Jim. I too have owned a stable full of Canon XL-1s and was genuniely sad...well not so much sad but lamentant when a young man starting out in the business bought our last one a couple of weeks ago after driving up form the Valley here in LA. Those cameras provide a great, great image, IMO, that is more filmic and less video than any other camera I've used. It has a quality about it that, while others like my buddy Mike Pellagatti in Scottsdale, still laugh about, I like. I didn't particularly like the XL-2s and don't have enough knowledge to comment on the new Canon HD flavor but the XL-1 will forever live on as part of our company. I know, Mike, "Shut up and produce and leave the camera stuff to me!". ;-)

Yes, yes. I'd hoped that Michael's group would give JVC service a chance to calibrate and also get to know each other professionally. There is NOTHING like good service and a good vendor relationship.

I also feel the same way about the JVC picture quality. It is in a whole different league particularly in the highlights and skin tone. I further agree with the sentiment that you can have two HD-100's for the price of one H1. I think two calibrated HD-100's could take any production company alot further than one H1. They're both really nice but the H1's price is hard to swallow unless you plan on using the HD-SDI often.

Hi Guys!

Hi Stephen. I really wanted to stay with the HD100... You can ask Elton how much I "agonized" over the choice between these cameras. Yes the Resolution nod goes to the Canon, however I still was willing to take that slight reduction because I know how well the HD100 performs for me. However when 4 different JVC people told me differing answers, what are we to do? I told Mark Barrett who was so awesome to us, that this makes it very confusing when I am getting so many people telling one thing and another that differs from within the same company!

I still long for the HD100, people all around me will tell you this. You know Stephen, that you, Jonathan and all of the great people here make this HD100 club of users a great place. None of the other camera groups have this connection, they simply don't. The JVC people were so nice to me. They were supportive like a company should be. It was only one thing that was the monkey wrench in the engine, that was the SSE. If not for that, we would have stuck with the HD100 as main camera. Up coming projects are going to need much higher gain settings. These productions are being shot at +12db indoor and out, nighttime and daytime, so I can't afford to have SSE of any kind. That worried us!

Now where does it stand, we are testing the H1, and even the XLH1's fait is uncertain. The 16x manual is on board because I can't stand the 20x. It's retarded lens IMHO. I even like the HD100/Fujinon lens better than the 16X manual canon in tactile response. We were offered to buy a brand new HD100 from Jonathan with IDX, we are considering this as well. I didn't jump ship, I only took the small speed boat over to the other yacht to see how the party is going on that one. Seriously though, If the H1 is not all that for what we need it will be sold in a heartbeat...

I will tell you this, the HD100 did fill all check points in a l list I created to evaluate cameras. It was just at that moment the SSE was not helping. However, Stephen you are 100% sure it can be gone and I believe you as well Ken Freed and others. The HD100 may well be the camera. The HD100 is what I want, however I must run it by others that are in my group before such a commitment can be made.

The way I look at these cameras is they are the film stock and Lab combined, so we need to get that camera choice set in stone first before we shoot a single production frame!

So I didn't jump ship, I like the party and people to much over here, you guys are great.... And the Yacht ( the HD100 ) R O C K S......................
