Pan's Labyrinth

From what I've read in the past two days, they are thematically very similar. Also, similarly disturbing because of it.

Another thing I've found is that the majority of reviewers give it fairly high marks.

I haven't been able to find it yet but hope to view it sometime this week.

found it for 4.99 used at blockbuster. If its not saw5 or oceans 17 then u can get these kinds of movies for really cheap.:)

Pan's Labyrinth was awesome. Just the depth of the filmmaking and wonderful storytelling that went into it blew my mind, and I've seen some very good movies. The use of color, too, was amazing. I loved this movie and am probably going to buy the DVD very soon. Be sure to watch the documentaries on the 2nd disc. Del Toro is a freakin genius and has got a good head on his shoulders.

But, it wasn't her imagination that her mother was better with the mango root in the milk under her bed. That really happened, which leans me toward believing that the fantasy world was real...and as FilmBoy points out, maybe more real than the world we live in.

No, it was not Ofelia's imagination that her mother got better. But, it WAS her imagination that the root had anything to do with it. You'll remember that she needed to give it two drops of blood. Now, consider how much medicine from the bottle that the mother needed to take.

I need to watch this movie again. It is truly wonderful.

It's a fairy tale. The real parts are imaginary, the imaginary parts are real; the falsity of it has nothing to do wih the truth of it.

One might as well try to separate the "real" parts from the "imaginary" parts, in 'Little Red Riding Hood,' or 'Hansel and Gretel.' It's a unified whole that doesn't lend itself to dissection.

One of the most overrated films I've seen in the past few years, along with A History of Violence.

I personally hated it, and I would say why... but seeing as it was so forgettable (although I watched it just 3 months ago) and unimportant, I'm not going to bother. All I can say is, what a worthless, bloated film (imo, of course; the tagline I'm moderator-enforced to say).

Does anyone else dislike this film, or am I the only one?

I know it's a strain to dredge up such a "forgettable" movie and force yourself to actually back an opinion up with...well, something. But at this point, I'm not surprised.

At least you found the strength to pop in and say something boorish and stupid. My God, you must need a nap after that!

You're not the only one. I didn't like it. And neither did my boyfriend or anyone else I went to see it with. I appreciate the creativity of the fantasy sequences. The rest was a mess for me. A lot of people loved it though. Movies are just so personal. But I have a long list of reasons why I think Pan didn't work.

Logic needn't be played to you, as you've already shown an (imho) indisposition towards them.
But to satisfy your myopic tendencies I'd thought I compile a short list for you to peruse at your leisure... which (I'm assuming, AKA imo) is in copious amounts.

- The cinematography was bland, uninspired, empty and dull. Meaning it was a sure fire for the Oscars.

- The characters were one-dimensional, empty, trivial beings not far off from a comic book film (which is logical if you'll peek at the director's silly other works.) Examples include the "ultra bad d00d," who, despite facing an ammo shortage, seemed to enjoy shooting people multiple times in the head, despite them clearly being dead. Ah yes, there's depth for you. Other examples are at hand if needed.

- The scenes were dry, pretentious and incredibly boring, probably because of the above mentioned lack-of-depth characters.

- The story didn't work. Girl makes friends with underground. Bad d00d kills girl since... well, he doesn't like her making friends with the underground. The end. Oh yeah, there's a few dull "fairy tale scenes" and some 24-like torture crap, that's totally gratuitous and serves no purpose other than to be (get ready for it) "shocking."

There's my reasons. If you disagree... well... say why.

Stefan, it's obvious you don't get this film. But that's okay...

Personally, this film has changed me and my perspective on life. I consider this the best film ever made.

What leads you to that impression?

I assure you, I "got" the film. I've written papers on religious nuances and implications in Solyaris. I've attended Seminars on Ozu. I understood every aspect of this film... and it was a poorly-made, poorly constructed piece of anti-art.

The best film ever made!? How many films have you seen?

I wouldn't go so far to say it is the best film ever made but I would say that it was a good film. One that I would gladly watch again.

I enjoyed the juxtaposition of the girl's imaginary fantasy world and the brutality of Franco's Spain. Some of the torture scenes were over the top but the went well with the other parts of the film.

The odd thing is that I didn't really grasp that the girl was imagining her world up until the moment she was shot. I had bought into the belief (for some reason) she would escape into the fantasy world but the moment she was shot shattered that.

I love movies where childhood imagination is played against real world brutality. 'Radio Flyer' (another great film) does the same thing. I love that movie as well.

The ambiguity of the 'real' versus the 'fantasy' worlds is part of what I enjoyed.

Logistics is the aspect of an organization or operation that deals with supply, replenishment, and transportation. Stefan, I am not sure how it's possible to find a film logistically objectionable, unless you worked on it and found the project to be disorganized, which perhaps you did.

It's clear to me now that English is not Stefans first language, so I cut him some slack. I'm just glad he posted something to back up his assertions.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have some copious leisure to waste with my myopic tendencies...
