GH4 Panny LX100 to backup GH4

I just preordered my LX100. I see it as an awesome second 4K body to go along with my GH4. Is anyone else considering doing the same?

Yes I am considering it but waiting to see if it has the video shooting limitation like canon and nikon , if it's like gh4 with no limit then I will get it for sure

It does look very nice, but first I need to get a GH4!

Personally I think I'd prefer the GM5 but why didn't Panasonic put 4K in there I don't know. T_T

Yes, for $899 I'm willing to be an early adopter. If I'm wrong, I can return or resell. If I'm right, my money is made back with the first job I take afterwards.

i don't have any micro 4/3rds cameras yet. this will be the first coming from C100, EX1, 5DmkIII, Nikon etc.

i didn't want to jump into a whole GH4 system with lenses which would cost a lot when i have strong reservation about its low light shooting. this seems like a safe way to test the waters.

the pictures posted if can be believed were amazing. the video looked great as well. the lens in this alone is probably worth 2/3rds the price of this camera.

this seems like a no brainer. like above poster says. it can be returned it if i don't like it.

it seems like there could be quite a long waiting list for this camera for the people that wait to order I'm thinking. do you all agree...yes, no?

I think the large sensor FZ1000 is a more comparable back up to the GH4 - in fact it's color accuracy is better than the GH4's and it's images slightly brighter as well. FZ1000 is only $899.00.

I think you're getting the cameras confused. The FZ1000 is the large superzoom with a slightly smaller, 1 inch sensor. The LX100 is slim and pocketable, but has a m43 sensor (although it's slightly cropped). I believe in UHD mode it has the same sensor crop as the GH4, so the OP is probably right that it's probably a similar image to the GH4. It's certainly the thing that has got me most interested out of the Photokina announcements. I have no idea how they have apparently managed to make a pocketable GH4.

Keep in mind that the specs for FZ1000 indicate the 4K mode is 30p only.

I was never impressed with the 1080 footage of the LX7 (lacked detail) so I'd definately want to download and examine a virgin 4K sample from the LX100 before ordering one. With the FZ1000 I don't have that worry - it definately has all the 4K detail of the GH4 and even better landscape color accuracy. Of course I realize the FZ1000 is not pocketable so in that sense it's not directly comparable to the LX100.

I'm not worried at all regarding the video quality of the LX100. It has the same fantastic sensor as my GX7 with the processing power of my GH4. It's a no-brainer for me. The FZ1000 is incredibly enticing though!

Have you received and tested your LX100? How does it compare to your GH4? Like you I've been considering the LX100 as a silent B-roll camera for gigs when I need my GH4 for interviews. Please update us on your experience with it.

I was considering it, but had to scrap the idea when I saw that the LX100 can't shoot C4K (only UHD), and even that has an artificially imposed 15 minute recording limitation.

That's just not viable for my work.

I found this link that says it's limit is 29:59.

It's probably due to sensor heat issues.

I guess this means that I couldn't use it as a 2nd camera angle for a concert, wedding ceremony, or other long event. But it'd still work for short & silent, run & gun b-roll footage.

I can't justify buying a LX100, but I'm probably going to have a client rent one for the low-budget horror feature I'm shooting for him on my GH4. I figure throw it on a gorillapod and it can bounce around for additional coverage in some crazy angles, possibly also on the GH4 hotshoe for a wider/closer version of the same shot. Might go with the FX1000 but I like the size and cheaper rental of the LX100.
