Panavised F3

I read the article about the Anthony Bourdain show being shot with Panavised F3's. What does Panavised mean other than using a Panavision lens? Which lens do they use and how can you have an F3 Panavised?

it's a completely different type of lens mount. so a camera with a panavision mount on it, is labelled panavised. it won't take any traditional PL glass.

Also on most "panavised" cameras, they add their 5/8" side rail bracket as well as a small dovetail style mount under the lens area to use their follow focus (which doesn't need rails under the camera). Would be cool to see how they rigged up the f3.

So what does it cost and who does the work to have your F3 Panavised?

They most likely (99% certain) won't Panavise any cameras which they don't own or are not in partnership with them... unless you're a huge ASC DP; and I mean huge... or you'll make them lots of money. Do you know who owns the F3's on that particular show? Panavision would be the ones doing it, but it doesn't work like that. There are personal owners of panavised camera gear, but it's usually high ticket items like Arriflex 435x's and etc. I don't see why they would do it for F3's they don't own or why people would want it unless a big production company is paying for it, considering you can't use any other lenses AND they don't typically rent lenses without camera bodies, a kind of recent non-official policy. Maybe this is an exception... panavision is getting really desperate these days. I've seen insane deals made with indie-productions.

remember the panavised 5d? it was really dumb... they made a bunch of those for 24 I think, and I think they did it for shane hurlbert too. Panavision is cutting deals left and right, mostly on their film gear. Knew a film student who got a whole panavision film package for practically nothing.

Yep! I think that is where the 'new' unofficial policy regarding having to rent a camera and lenses came from. They quickly stopped Panavising 5D's and now there are only a couple left, I believe. They need to figure out a business strategy and fast... or they are just going to become a regular rental house with great lenses. Gone seems the days of panavision being a camera manufacturer... then again, they basically stole the mitchel movement for their cameras, so it's really their camera manufacturing history was always a type of 'panavising' in a way. :)

I love Panavision and Mole Richardson, but if they don't get with the program, they will be left behind. I'm rooting for them! So far, Arri, is kicking both of them in the manufacturing world.

My sentiments exactly, their Genesis is a dying horse they won't let go of. the production for Captain America was even starting to regret choosing that camera because it was that much more difficult to accomplish all the vfx compared to other more modern cameras.

film is ever so slowly dying too.

and even their famous primo's that rival master primes may get out classed all together by the new Leicas coming out (same lens tech...)

all they basically have to offer nowadays is their undying amazing service/support, and their classic anamorphics. unfortunately those two things alone can't sustain a production house. They still shoot all the time in hollywood, but that means nothing when all the middle end to lower end productions have moved elsewhere... I believe they've been in serious financial issues these past few years, going the way of Kodak...

it's rough too, I've always loved Panavision and everything they've accomplished and stood for. Hopefully they can stay in the fight.

Y. then again, they basically stole the mitchel movement for their cameras

Always thought they bought Mitchel or they purchased a whole bunch of old cameras and then just starting up dating them... who knows... always wanted to use Panavision... only rented HD cameras from them when they bought out Plus 8... but did rent a Red package with ultra primes... great deal... so don't know if that counts or not...

Yeah, they did. They took the mitchel movement from inside mitchel cameras and basically put them inside their cameras which were new bodies and some modifications. They didn't invent their own movement from scratch. That is at least the way I know it.

Who did you get the Red and Ultra's from? Do you mean Panavision Ultra's? Those aren't bad. I always hated how Panavision has super speeds and ultras' as does Arri. Very confusing. :P

That was Panavising- that's what the term came from.
This F3 is a half ass hack job with tape(??!!!) over VF
What a shame... I worked for Panavision back in the 80's what a great place to work that was....

I worked there during the 2008-2009 area. Was a cool place to work, but I'm sure not as cool as the 80's when Panavision was king.

Unless you already own the glass (which I think Panavision doesn't sell..they just rent) why would anyone want to do this?

For a popular TV show there are financial reasons to rent versus buying gear. The camera costs (Rental) are a set fixed expense and should be fully deductible as a business expense, where as buying a camera package, a capital investment, must be amortized, and takes more complicated accounting to get the full value out of it. Also by renting, the cost of maintenance, repair, and upgrades would be born by the rental company. If there is problems with the camera, a company like Panavision, with a world wide presence, would probably have the resources to service the production with as little down time as is possible. Switching up the camera package, with different lenses or other accessories would mean possible adjustments to the camera rental rates, instead of the cost of purchase. I am sure that there are other advantages to renting over owning. So, at a certain level, renting makes more sense then buying.
