Panasonic's New Prosumer AVCHD Camera Mock-up

Well, I guess it's only the performace that matters in the end.
I bet it performs well.

But, man - I think they had someone from their toaster department design it!

I don't care what it looks like, more what it will do and how it feels. To me the DVX was the perfect size and had a great feel. Give me that with AVCHD, 4 ch's audio (a dream), cheap cards to record onto, a lcd screen that flips and variable frame rates and I am in. I know Panasonic is going to step up to the plate soon and swing big, but Canon and Sony are giving them a spanking right now...

4 channels? AVC-HD supports up to 7.1 uncompressed channels of audio. :) (of course, we have no idea how many audio channels this new product supports).

Definitely looks like a cross between the HVX and DVX in terms of appearance.

Rings on the lens and such, make me feel more like it is a DVX HD avc-hd replacement, rather than a EX competitor... but who knows.

Looks like it's starting to touch on what Barry has been preaching for, but may not quite go that far.... but then I'm completely assuming based off of the picture of the body there, so... who knows.... Weird body though.

Question: In terms of processor demand in post-production, what would be the comparison between a 24mbps avc-hd and the 35 codec of the ex? Would they be comparable, being that both are long gop? Or...?

Later,
Jason

AVC-HD would be worse. It's a highly processor-intensive codec. The EX is just basically MPEG-2 HDV with variable bitrate instead of constant bitrate; the larger frame size will slow it down some but most NLEs have decent MPEG performance nowadays.

Can't say that about AVC yet. I still expect we'll see NLEs tap into the AVC hardware acceleration in graphics cards, that should give us some realtime performance. Until they do, it's really really slow.

I think it would look great next to my Commodore64. :) If Panasonic wants to put money into making something look pretty, they should start with their websites.

No - avc-hd will be far more demanding than the EX. Complexity is the price you pay for efficiency (assuming a given quality). Long GOP is one level of complexity, AVC (v MPEG) is another.

Which comes back to why I think AVC-HD is best suited to the consumer world, where not much post production happens. High quality at low bitrate.

And why AVC-Intra to SDHC cards would make a vast amount of sense in small professional cameras, the higher end still using P2.

I never thought the 200 was a particularly pretty camera. I just liked what it did.

Interesting, though, how no one's saying that the AVCHD Gear mockup looks the same as the P2 Gear, even in the menu screens. Navigating P2-style through the AVCHD footage would be pretty cool.

Kaku's site has pictures of all sorts of stuff, including an AVC-HD monitor (?) Huh?

(I mean, maybe it has an SD slot and can play AVC-HD footage directly? Otherwise, what would that mean?)

So Barry, before i drive myself crazy, should i just pull the trigger on the XHA1? I'm very new to manual controls and need to learn the basics, so it makes me wonder if I deserve it. it's that or the dvx100b. Please, put me out of my misery :) I really love panasonic product, but the HVX is way out of my price range, and dvc30 doesn't do 24p, and I want to play with that.

Any individual camera choice is driven by what you intend to do with it, not by whatever is fashionable or "hot" at the current moment. Or, at least, it should be.

If you need HDV, I recommend the XHA1 -- I think it's the best HDV camcorder on the market, for performance at the price. I happen to hate HDV as a format, but I recognize that a lot of people use it successfully, so if you want HDV, the XHA1 is my pick. But does that mean you should get it over an HVX? Of course not. Or over a DVX? Of course not. It all depends on what you intend to do with it.

Well we currently shoot fairly simple short documentaries based around land use issues. Lots of interviews with supporting broll. I'm not a theatrical film maker if that helps. I was also attracted to learning the dvx from your materials. I'm sure someone makes something similar for XHA1. Do you reccomend any?

Do I need HD? Just based on your comments in another thread, that downconverted HD is so much better, that seemed compelling. And it's tape based, which I can afford. I don't know why I labor over this, but I just can't make up my mind. If that helps any. And that I'm a novice as well.

I guess it's the allure of the great material produced with the DVX (and of course the price point and it's form factor), but if I could learn to shoot events or weddings to make some income, and people want HD, I'd be covered.

BTW, I don't remember why or where you said you dislike HDV, but if could recap your thoughts on that, that would be interesting. Thanks.

Looks a lot like a SD slot & card at the bottom right. .. next to the RECORD BUTTON. To me that looks like a AVC-HD deck built into a monitor? Wow.

Those BluRay / AVC-HD recoders/decks looks prettry interesting too ... I'd love to see the back of those puppies ... Video inputs & outputs maybe?

Sure that stuff looks mighty interesting along with a new AVC-HD camera ... but I want to know the level of interconectabilty with the P2 line, and other formats. Have your director's monitor record the Component output from the camera to AVC-HD? Or perhaps straight to BluRay in one of those desks as a live backup? Or maybe even pull a AVC-HD recording through HDMI or Component from a HDV camera?

And how about dumping out your edit masters to AVC-HD .. while I think it'll be ok as a recording format, I think it'll be *great* as a delivery format.

Love to get more information on that gear ... depending on what's on the backs of those units, there's a LOT of potential there. :):)

Ok, now I'm just snooping around...

What's the back of that shoulder camera to the left of the handheld camera? Looks like the back of the AG-HMC70 mentioned earlier in this thread:
AG-HMC70_upcoming1.jpg

But then what camera is that we see reflected in the monitor? Looks like a full sized shoulder mount camera. 3000 perhaps? Something else? ... I wouldn't think the 500 would be under glass.

Oh, and with the "AG-HMC70" succeeding the "AG-DVC20"
Then what is the new handheld AVC-HD camcorder to the AG-DVX100?
AG-HMX100? 200? well, Panny generally doesn't repeat numbers .. so perhaps 150? or 300?

How bizarre...

I wonder if it's an archiving system to data blu-ray, or an authoring station for video blu-ray? AVC-HD is supposed to be 100% compatible with blu-ray players so it's potentially possible it could be both...

Not entirely sold on any long-GOP format for acquisition, but for delivery it does look like it'd be ideal for delivering on blu-ray or HD-DVD, they both support AVC IINM. Of course, that all depends on if the mass market actually adopts either disc format. But even if not, I wonder how cheap reasonably-priced SD cards could get, and if one could consider them as a distribution media someday...
