AG-HPX600 is the Industry's Lightest Shoulder-Mount camera with microP2 Media Series/SD Card Form Factor, as well supporting AVC-ULTRA the latest in a new generation of video compression platform. Coming in at a modest 7 pounds the HPX600 incorporates a newly-developed 2/3 type MOS sensor to produce beautiful HD images. The HPX600 allows now user to upgrade path to new functionality as it becomes available like AVC-ULTRA recording & variable frame rates . Good news future-proof camera approach!

The AG-HPX600 will be available in the Fall at a targeted suggested list price of less than $16,000 (body only). Wow! For such a camera with all it's technology, that's one hell of price. 10 years ago, this would easily many many times this price.

This system is only the beginning. I wonder if the London Olympic Games 2012 will have some 4K ultra trial runs? The price tag alone on the AG-HPX600 is amazing. I know some will think that is expensive, however the wealth of technology/R&D that is packed in this, it's a steal. If you told people in the professional/broadcast market ten years what you were going to get for 16K in the near future. That might of laughed you at of the room.

And the new microP2 cards, how awesome is that. SD cards with the reliability and durability that goes with the P2 philosophy.

Mildly confused with the MicroP2... are these just really good SD cards, or P2 in an easy-to-confuse form factor? Would these be useable in cameras like the AF100 or just in the MicroP2 adapter?

Do I really have to pay money to have my long-toothed HVX updated for these? Why? Just to push me ever so more towards buying a HPX250?

Oh well, I have a good year or so to think it over.

Sounds like they are P2 (re-designed and smaller) and the adapter allows them to work with existing P2 cams. That's what I got from it anyway.

Wow, this Panasonic 4k modular Varicam - what a honor to Jim Jannard and his Red team that Panasonic choosed same upgradable modular philosophy for their 4K baby ...
Jim will be grinning till the end of this year

Lots of will be moaning about form factor etc., but I like it. Nowadays most of cameras are so small that you can allways rig it to whatever you want and add a lead brick wherever you want! But we have to wait linttle longer to see how good is pany 4K picture. 4K hype started all major labels had to show their 4K cards this year, no matter how far they with development.

Come to think of the patently obvious, but they ARE marked "SDHC/SDXC" on the obverse... so I guess that answers that question.

Use their "really really good SDHC...er, µP2 cards" at full speed, or any old Class 10 SD at artificially crippled 50mbps...

In a sense, they seem to be giving up on P2 per se.

Someone had written something similar earlier, anyway... OK, you and me, we are not @reduser so should re-locate : D In any case, you are right once before we were not used to see modular philosophies, new firmware updates to come or as Michael (Pappas) pointed out, for sure never this price range.

With all the respect i have for Red, let's not tell please Red invent the concept of modular design please, this is just silly. When i look at my 30th year hasselblad, it has already this "modular design"...

HPX600 for $16000? Wow. That is a must-upgrade for many broadcasters and ENG-teams.

Yes, but don't forget this is an CMOS sensor not CCD.

So this is Panasonic's answer to the Sony PMW350. The Sony is currently priced at 17.8K at CVP (and 13.6K €, I don't get it - it doesn't add up. It should be 14.8K). The suggested list price is lower then the one from Sony, and it's probably a better camera. So I guess that the price of the 350 will have to drop. I expect some rebates from Sony until fall.

It would have been nice if Panasonic announced a stock lens to go with the HPX600 - same as the 350K has it's own lens.

CMOS is fine for broadcast. There are several broadcast-rated cameras with CMOS chips. I'm assuming the HPX600 will have full raster 1920x1080 chips and not that up-rezzed, pixel-shifting crap like from the 500. I can't imagine Panny would do that in newly designed chips in 2012.

I think the HPX600 blows the PMW350 out of the water. The codec of the 600 is so superior to the 350's, it's not even a contest. AVC/Intra 100, 10-bit, 4:2:2 compared to XDCAM 35mbps, 8-bit, 4:2:0? Panasonic for the big win. This is a broadcast camera right out of the box.
Throw in the micro P2 cards and the 600 is king of the hill.

Well, there's a difference between cameras market of 1 or few frames per second and 24 to start with ;-)

Yes I know. I wasn't replying because of that. I was only saying that's it's CMOS because everybody was surprised about the price point. It's CMOS, CCD shoulder mount cameras are expensive not CMOS. That's what I wanted to emphasize.

CMOS or CCD aside this camera still comes in cheaper than the current best and only camera in this class the PMW350, so it's good news!:) I'm definitely a potential customer when fall comes. I just won't be the first in line to buy it as I've learned that you must wait half a year for bugs to get sorted out - don't want to be a test monkey!

My HPX 301 and 371 are four years old next year so will look at a couple of 601's for then, at least I can hopefully see one at the olympics when I am working on it this year and see if it is OK.
