Panasonic's 4K/2K Camera Technology Announcements & Latest Info-NAB 2012

Yeah anyone know what will be the price for the 4K cam from pany ? I won't buy another 1080p camera.I think 1080p is nearing it's final days judging all the latest offerings from Canon,JVC,Panasonic,Sony.Red has some competition now.I think all the manufacturers are ganging up to stop the " Red Menace" taking over the world.Where have I heard that before ? oh well.

1080P isn't nearing it's final days. The best camera in the world, the ARRI Alexa, is 1080P.

Alexa can shoot 1080P but it can also shoot 2.8K RAW. 2880x1620 to be precise.

Coincidentally, in the last month I have delivered over 20 shots as DPX files for an Alexa-shot feature and 2880x1620 is the requested resolution. QC has been fun. I have a 27" 2560x1440 monitor and a 24" 1080p monitor but since 2880 is higher-res than either of them... you still have to pan around and check any delivery in stages. Then scale the thing down and check it overall.

The most interesting thing: this is for a comedy. Image isn't the selling point. Hopefully everyone will be laughing so hard that they won't care what K it is. But... they shot 2.8K so as far as they're concerned, they want everything done at 2.8K. Simple as that.

Now... will final film out or DCI master be at 2.8K? Dunno. But it probably makes everyone a lot happier to have resolution to spare until the last moment.

Can anyone confirm that the HPX600 uses 3 CMOS chips? Is it possible it only uses one? All the literature says "sensor," as in singular.

The literature seems to specifically state "1xMOS chip" so it seems to be a single chip camera. Is that correct? It seems bizarre if so. All else equal, a single chip camera will lose at least a stop of native sensitivity compared to a comparable three chip version. So surely this must mean it will be comparable for sensitivity to a three chip 1/2" camera?

And what are the other characteristics of the chip? If it's 1920x1080 Bayer, the deBayered resolution won't be anywhere near what you'd expect from a 1080 camera. It will put it at a distinct disadvantage to the PMW350, which it seems to be a very similar price to.

There are good reasons for making large format cameras (such as s35) single chip for manufacturing reasons, but that doesn't apply to 2/3" - as pretty well all 2/3" shouldermounts have shown.
