P2 offload using NEXTO Ultra ND2525 - good experience - just bought one!

All, I would like to announce some success with regard to HVX-200 P2 offload in the field with a self powered storage device.

I just picked up a NEXTO ULTRA ND2525 enclosure and goodies with additional batteries and and a 160GB PATA DDM and wish to report on my results so far.

The device is manufactured from a company called NEXTODI - http://www.nextodi.com/en/

If pictures are desired, I will post these. Please advise.

I purchased the NEXTO ULTRA ND2525 as a means to OFFLOAD my 16GB P2 from
my new HVX-200 over the firewire 1394a unpowered bus.

I wanted a means of doing this without having to drag my MacbookPro with me or relying on a house powered external firewire disk enclosure whilst in the field.

In short, I wanted a SELF POWERED portable DISK STORAGE with a 6 pin firewire interface that lasted for some time when powered on that I could use in the field.

So after a recommendation from Barry Green (a post somwehere in this forum), I went out and purchased the Nexto ULTRA ND2525.

Works great first time!

•*NO accurate timing yet from me. However around 2mins/GB from the HVX200 in 1394 host mode.
• Same from NEXTO ND2525 to FCP 6 via Log and TRansfer. FAster of course if "drag 'n drop" from NEXTO ND2525 filesystem to the host file system (of the OSX) and then Log & Transfer in FCP. (to MACPRO 8CORE - )

The ND2525 is really solid looking/feel and a nice black leather case with space included for the additional external battery (thus 2 x batteries = internal & external if you like - all included in the price).

• 6pin FW cable included , usual 1200mm or there abouts
• power supply with varying detachable house/wall socket power point faces for UK/SING/HK, Europe/Africa, Australia/NZ/PRC and Kor/TAiwan/JApan/Americas - so very cool
• a cool blue screwdriver to manage the tiny screws for the outside of the enclosure.
• oh and stuff for using a memory card (not of interest to me).

Lastly my reasons for buying this other than the recommendation from Barry Green is that I tried varying portable FW drives such as the LaCie Porsche and an external LAPTOP BATTERY back (spun up but wouldn't be recognised by HVX200) with no success.

The major draw back is that the time to transfer nearly 16GB is probably about 25- 35mins+ before you can reuse the camera. This is ok for me at present.

I plan to buy another P2 card 16GB (or +) and thus I will have a longer shoot time before I need to offload.

Summary:
• this is a very good price effective method of having a portable OFFLOAD facility for the P2 workflow on the HVX-200. The ND2525 is a very small and works well , and as many have stated, the HVX-200 performs verification over the 1394 path/control
• the DDM's are really cheap now. The NEXTO ULTRA ND2525 will now support a 250GB PATA and higher with the latest microcode/firmware I'm told. (THe factory and owners are in Seoul I believe)
• and as we all probably know this NEXTO ND2525 (and its ilk) is NOT a replacement for something like a FS-100. Simply it is not to be compared. For example one cannot be used for DIRECT recording from the HVX-200... etc

I purchased this ND2525 in Hong Kong (where I live). It was $HK1450 (€135).

The PATA 160GB DDM was $HK800 (< €80 ) ... so I think for me this is good value for what this as an intermediate and cost effective workflow to offload one or more P2's in the field without a laptop or more sophisticated method of FS-100 or more P2's.

I may also use the one of the PATA DDM's from one of my portable LaCIE Porsche drives. This will be an additional storage "for the road" as well. THese DDM's are easily changed in and out. It took me less than 5 minutes to insert the DDM (or extract/replace). This may give be an extra 160GB or 250GB of storage in the field without the need for a laptop or a power outlet (power point/wall socket)., albeit that the NEXTO ULTRA ND2525 batteries will eventually run out.

I will be dragging this and the HVX-200 through Vietnam and Borneo (Malaysia) in December/Jan.. I expect it will be ok. [not in the jungle BTW]

Should anyone desire some more info on the NEXTO ULTRA ND2525, please post .

cheers

yes, the key things here are that this drive aside from being self powered (and not requiring 1394a buss power) is fast and works first time and is compact and is a viable temporary workflow in the field without using a laptop or more P2 cards.

Hey Warwickt:

I read your thread and also have a question for you about the ND2525. Do you know if it is possible to downloan the content of an FS100 to the ND2525 for backup by way of firewire or usb and keep on shooting with the FS100 in the field.

That would really be nice if you could.

Meshack.

Hi Meshack, sorry mate.. I have no idea. I have only seen the FS-100 at NAB and IBC...
I guess the FS-100 or the ND2525 would need to be a "HOST" for such a I/O transfer in such a workslow.

Will watch this thread and see if ideas.

32Bit PCMCIA CF adapter

32Bit PCMCIA CF adapter

Here's something I thought about. Then use an adapter like this that would accept 32 bit PCMCIA cards like P2.
http://www.accurite.com/CFPCAdapter.html

I emailed them to see if they know if it accept P2 cards, I haven't heard back yet.

Why would you do that when you could buy a
32Bit CF adapter $29.99

use it with a High Speed CF card like a

8GB Lexar 300X 8GB only $169.99 after discount code $30OFF8GB300X

or
16GB Transcend UDMA enabled Compact Flash $129.99
http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/SP...d-compact-flash-card--8000029D-1189545879.jsp

That would be a good alt. to a P2 card (way less money). Then you could just slide that out and put it straight into your laptop or take the card out and use it in the Nex To 2525 or Compact Flash card reader.

it is a UDMA card reader (hard to find and usually expencive).

Shouldn't firewire be more like 1 minute per gig? Or is that 2 min/gb vith verify thing on?

Matt:

If you are trying to use this adapter inside the p2 card slots on the HVX200 to record to, it won't work.

Not sure what you are suggesting, but it won't work of that is your suggestion

A P2 card is basically its own microcomputer, with its own firmware and everything. The only thing that could possibly be substituted for a P2 card would be a device that's specifically engineered to exactly mimic the behavior of a P2 card.

No off-the-shelf components will ever work for that purpose, it would have to be specifically designed to mimic a P2 card's behavior.

Nexto 2525, via firewire, is 1 min. per gig.

The HDD speed should be a factor, but in my limited testing it really didn't seem to make much difference. I put a cheapo old drive in a USB-OTG enclosure and got 2 min/gig. Then I bought a Hitachi 7K100 (fastest laptop drive at the time) and tried it, and it was: 2 min per gig.

So something about USB-OTG seems to limit the speed.

all, yes I get about 1GB/ 2mins in the FW400 to my ND2525. I believe mine is a TRAVELSTAR 5400 RPM.

So with 2 x P2 cards (2 x 16GB), it takes 30mins+ (approx).

Still with this "latency" between HVX-200 usage, this time taken is not an issue compared with the convenience of having this ability to OFFLOAD in the field without a laptop or wall POWERED external disk storage.

I will be using this in CAmbodia in a week.. so I will let you guys know.

cheers!

Chris, yes this is quite interesting. Looks like a cool product.

I first tried (to no avail) to use a VICTORY 100+ (PRC product) portable battery with a LaCie Porsche drive and although powered up and SPUN up would NOT be recognised by the HVX-200 in 1394-HOST mode.

I tried in vain but could not get it to work (USB 5V or other source of the BATTERY SUPPLY)

I WAS able to use another larger external disk with the battery but it was far to "clunky" ot be useful as a portable device.

The NEXTODI ND2525 is compact and has a spare battery (I have 3 batteries) and this lasts for ages.

Hi warwickt,
i`m very happy to find you, cause i have a question about the NEXTO which my dealer could not answer.
I have a OQO 01 with a non powered firewire plug. Theoretically the NEXTO is the perfect solution for me.
But i have heard that some battery powered USB-HD´s are stopping power from their battery when the are connected to a computer via cable. Cause normaly in this situation they get the power from the computer. The OQO have a 4 Pin non power firewire connection and the NEXTO have a 6 Pin plug. Can you tell me if it is still possible to use the NEXTO with it`s own power?

Best regards from Germany

JJ

I've recently purchased a Nexto (like warwickt, to offload files when traveling to distant lands), but I'm not having the same ease of use. I'm not sure if this is a camera issue or a Nexto issue. When I'm all connected and in 1394 Host mode, I get an error message that states: "Too many targets! Turn Power off!" That's a lot of exclamation points. I turn the power off and now I'm back to square one.

So... any thoughts out there? I've got a week to get this resolved before we depart for Vanuatu. (Yes.... the same place that "Survivor" was shot.)

TIA.
